Stories can be powerful things, but what are the truths behind those tales? Gospel, a new miniseries out this November from Image Comics aims to find out, and Screen Rant has an exclusive preview of this new work by up-and-coming artist and writer Will Morris.
Winner of the 2013 Emerging Talent British Comics Award, Will Morris is best known for his breakthrough work, Silver Darlings. Capable of elegant illustrations and powerful story-telling, Morris is the perfect creator to team up with Image for its next big miniseries. The third-largest comic and graphic novel publisher, Image has produced memorable stories like: The Walking Dead, Invincible, Saga, and Radiant Black. Founded by comic writers and artists, Image recently made history as the first unionized comic company in America. Trumpeting a creator-friendly approach has been the key to Image's success and also what makes it the perfect place for a multi-talented storyteller like Morris.
Gospel is Morris' all-new historical fantasy adventure set in the chaos of England under the reign of King Henry VIII. Matilde, along with her friend Pitt, find themselves thrust into a quest for answers after the devil comes knocking. This hellish arrival triggers a new set of questions for the protagonists, but the answers that Matilde and Pitt seek will threaten to tear them apart and undermine the very nature of their own existence. At its heart, Gospel is an examination of the stories we tell and what really lies beneath them. Enjoy a preview of Gospel #1, below.
According to Morris:
Gospel's story emerged on long road trips to Cornwall (long by British standards anyway). It's a place where magic still hangs in the air and ancient stories and folklore fill the book racks in roadside stores. Who were these stories for? What master did they serve? These questions whirled in my head as I started to write Matilde and Pitt's quest for identity, renown and the soul of their community. This comic is for those that enjoy action, adventure, devils, giants, assassins and friends that stumble, fall and rise again. It's a comic for anyone that has ever felt they had something to live up to.
Inspired by the works of Hayao Miyazaki, Gospel blends elements of both fantasy and history to weave a story that examines our world and ourselves from new and interesting angles. The images by Morris depict Matilde as she finds herself dealing with a giant boar, raging through a small town. They leave destruction in their wake, but in the end the story's protagonist proves her skill and bravery, and lunges to take down the great beast. Morris is able to use his deft artistic talents and keen writing to create s that are both stylish and action-packed.
With beautiful artwork and a fascinating story about stories, Gospel promises to be the next big book from the publisher of Saga. Make sure to check out more of what Matilde and her friend, Pitt, can do in this new world by Will Morris and Image Comics - Gospel will be on sale in comic book stores starting in November.
