Other games in the genre, such as Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic the Gathering, and even Hearthstone, have their own unique "effect" mechanic. That is a system in their games that performs powerful effects when a card is played. Legends of Runeterra has its own way of implementing this "effect" mechanic through the Keyword system. That is giving a card a "Keyword" which corresponds to a particular ability. An example of this is Plunder, a Keyword that triggers when you play a card after damaging an enemy. All Plunder cards share this Plunder ability, with varying effects. The recent massive update to Runeterra has introduced a variety of new Keywords to the game. Here are all the new Keywords added to Legends of Runeterra explained,

Here are all the latest additions to Legends of Runeterra's selection of Keywords.

  • Invoke- when a card with this keyword is played, the player will select one of 5 randomly generated Celestial units (a new card type) and add it to their hand. An extremely powerful effect for Celestial centered decks.
  • Fury- essentially giving a name to an existing effect, this ability grants a unit +1 strength if it defeats an enemy unit. A powerful ability for aggro decks.
  • Daybreak- Daybreak cards will trigger their effects when they are the first card played during a turn.
  • Nightfall-  Nightfall cards will trigger their effects as long as they are not the first card played during that turn.
  • Spellshield- When a Spellshield is cast on an ally, any effects from spells or unit abilities will be nullified, allowing them to survive the effect.

Each of these new effects presents the capability for players to craft fun and unique decks with each Keyword in mind. Molding and shaping a new meta for the game, presenting some much-needed variety.
