Microsoft Edge, the browser that replaces the infamous Internet Explorer has reached another milestone recently as many of its beta features have gone live. This new version of Edge could give people a strong alternative to Chrome and Firefox.
Microsoft touted a bevy of new features a few months ago, saying they would be implemented in the coming months. Those ideas included things like vertical tabs, Monitoring, and Collections. The preview builds that allowed s to test those options are now being rolled into the main browser via an update, signaling that the new version of Edge has officially gone public.
Getting started with Edge is easy and can be done in multiple ways. Since it's still the default Windows 10 browser, everyone on that OS should already have some version of it. The manual is available from iOS.
What the New Microsoft Edge Can Do
The most important thing to know for anyone interested in this new Edge browser is that it prioritizes people making the switch. None of this would work out well if transitioning was difficult and Microsoft emphasizes various ways of easing the process. All versions of Edge communicate with one another, so tweaking settings on the iOS version should affect the Windows version, for example. The browser can import bookmarks, credentials, and even s many Chrome extensions. Additionally, Microsoft is vocal about its commitment to compatibility and making sure people using web applications for work will be able to do so with Edge. In fact, its blog post about this new update is mostly comprised of information on that front.
Aside from ways it can mimic other browsers, the new Edge brings many fresh ideas. Its new tab page is fully customizable, providing choices like a simple layout with just a few frequently-used pages, or a full home page with news based on interests the provides, weather updates, and so on. This version also comes with the brilliant Monitoring system, which can alert s when their credentials are compromised or in danger, and direct them to a site's changing form. Vertical tabs and Collections are also novel ideas that could have a great impact on productivity.
This new version of Microsoft Edge isn't the final one, of course. There are three different levels of preview programs for those interested in trying new features before they go live to everyone. The beta channel updates at least every six weeks and is the most stable, bug-tested preview version. The Dev channel is updated weekly and represents changes made over the past week. The Canary channel updates daily so it's the least stable, but it's also the most transparent.
