Until then, there are several movies hitting the multiplex. None of them stand a chance of stealing the box office crown from Thanos, but it would be unfortunate to overlook these movies just because they're doomed to be overtaken by the second weekend of Infinity War.

There are three movies opening wide this weekend, May 4, none of which are taking on the Avengers per se, but all hope to prvoide some suitable counter-programming. For those of you looking for something totally non-superhero (or a break after your fourth trip to Infinity War), here's what else is on offer.
Overboard
Anna Faris has often spoken of her all-time favorite movie, 1987's Overboard, starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Her latest movie is the remake, in which she plays the rough-around-the-edges Kurt Russell analogue, while Eugenio Derbez plays the Goldie Hawn character, a privileged and prissy socialite who gets amnesia after falling off his private yacht. Faris takes advantage of the situation and romantic comedy ensues!
The combined star power of Faris and Derbez, as well as the cult classic status of the original film and the gender-reversed casting of the remake are all factors in Overboard's favor, but it will need more than just curious fans of the original to win out.
Tully
Charlize Theron's latest film is the intimate drama, Tully. Written by Diablo Cody (Juno, Young Adult) and directed by her frequent collaborator, Jason Reitman (Up in the Air), Tully is a difficult drama about postpartum depression. Theron plays an over-exerted mother who hires a nanny, the title character. Comedy and drama ensue.

The film isn't the type which usually sees a wide release, with the prior track record of the writer and director, as well as Theron's star power, boosting it to a higher level. It's a shame it's being dropped it in the shadow of The Avengers, rather than during awards season or a less-crowded release window. Still, the film could serve as strong counter-programming for audiences who simply have no interest in comic book superheroes.
Bad Samaritan
The final wide-release of the weekend is Bad Samaritan, a twisted thriller from director Dean Devlin, best known for his work producing Roland Emmerich hits like Independence Day and The Patriot.
The intriguing premise sees two valet drivers sneaking into a house in an attempted burglary, only to discover a woman imprisoned by the house's psychotic owner, played by David Tennant (Doctor Who, Jessica Jones). A violent game of cat-and-mouse ensues.
If it lives up to its premise, Bad Samaritan has all the makings of a cult classic, but it's hard to see the film making an impression at the box office.

The Hindi-language Bollywood flick, 102 Not Out is also opening, but it's getting a limited release in just a handful of theaters. Still, the quirky drama about a 102-year-old man and his 75-year-old son might be a surprisingly solid performer on a per-theater basis once the box office results come in at the end of the weekend
