Summary

  • MultiVersus features team-based gameplay with characters grouped into roles like Assassin, Bruiser, Ranged, , and Tank.
  • Only four new characters have been confirmed for MultiVersus' full launch.
  • Future leaked characters for MultiVersus include a wide range of franchises, expanding the game's appeal.

After a lengthy downtime, Warner Bros. Games' MultiVersus is set to release with a seemingly larger roster than was present in the beta. MultiVersus pits some of the most popular characters from the company's franchises together in a fighting game for the ages. First shown off in a beta test during 2022 and 2023, the beta ended in June 2023, so the development team could turn a full focus on polishing the game, which already seemed to have a great starting point.

MultiVersus follows a similar formula that other popular fighting games like Super Smash Bros. does. Battles take place in evolving arenas that usually have multiple vertical layers, and players accumulate damage that will eventually blast them away. Each character has a unique skill set to utilize and items can periodically drop around the arena to give temporary advantages. Overall, while MultiVersus didn't change much from others in the genre, the intriguing gameplay and excellent design of fan-favorite characters helped generate interest.

A Colorful Cast Of Fighters

Currently, only four characters that weren't present in the beta have been confirmed for launch. These are DC Comics' Joker with Mark Hamill returning returning to voice the archnemesis of Batman, Banana Guard from Adventure Time, Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, and Agent Smith, recurring villain in The Matrix. Though the chances are more new characters will be released along with the game, those are currently unknown.

Every character in MultiVersus is grouped into one of five roles that dictate how their kit plays. Assassins focus on combo attacks meant to raise damage counters quickly. Bruisers are a hybrid mix of heavy attacks with more tankiness than standard characters. Ranged characters are the most fragile, but make up for it with kits based on keeping distance and attacking repeatedly from afar. s are tanky like Bruisers but with abilities meant to enable teammates rather than outright damage the enemy. Lastly, Tanks have heavy defenses meant to absorb as much damage as possible while doing moderate damage.

Overall, these five roles have helped set MultiVersus stand apart and elevate its team-based gameplay. Character match-up is still an important choice, but is lessened by team synergy. Even if one character is going into a bad match-up, a synergistic teammate can more than bridge the gap.

These leaks show the vast range of franchises that could be included in MultiVersus, which is important. The more franchises that are present, the more people may be inclined to try the game. The same effect can also be said for players who have never seen popular titles like Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings and take an interest after seeing the characters in the game. Overall, as long as Warner has the rights, hundreds of potential characters would fit MultiVersus.

Of the names on this list, the most likely ones are those from DC or older cartoons. The game has seemed to lean into these popular and nostalgic options both for fans and a better thematic fit. However, since characters like Gizmo and Stripe made the roster, the chances of other movie characters ing the roster are high. While less likely, there were rumblings that some non-Warner properties could find their way into MultiVersus at some point.

As MultiVersus prepares for its release date, it is likely players will see a roster much larger than the 25 currently confirmed. Even if the roster remains unchanged, the likelihood of new characters being added shortly after will be high. As much as the gameplay and cosmetics will need to be engaging to keep player retention, so will consistently adding new characters to keep the roster fresh. Much of the game will be familiar initially, with only four non-beta characters confirmed for MultiVersus, but with any luck, that will change quickly.
