New Mutants and X-Men: Dark Phoenix being delayed to 2019.

Now, both movies are undergoing reshoots and The New Mutants seems to be changing its entire tone. It has been reported that IT's success helped inspire New Mutants' reshoots, as Fox now wants to rework the film into being more of a full-blown horror movie - something that it wasn't before, despite what its teaser trailer suggested. As a result, New Mutants has been pushed back nearly a year and a half, in order to allow for the time needed to properly revamp the film.

Speaking with EW, The New Mutants star Charlie Heaton (who plays Cannonball in the film) offered his assurances that the reshoots will result in a movie unlike any comic book adaptation before it:

“It’s basically about these mutants in a facility for damaged mutants. It’s a story about these characters coming to grips with who they are and it’s a horror X-Men movie, which we haven’t seen before. I feel like, for an X-Men movie, yeah, I think they’re going full-fledged horror. Without saying too much — I really don’t want to give away too much what it’s about, it’s very under wraps — but it is, in of anything we’ve seen in the X-Men world, it definitely is a horror film. It’s scarier than anything we’ve seen in that genre.”

The New Mutants cast crouched in a corridor

Heaton is hardly new to the horror and thriller genres. He made his name playing Jonathan in Stranger Things and can currently be seen in the film Marrowbone alongside his New Mutants costar Anya Taylor-Joy. So while The New Mutants was originally closer to The Shining, channeling IT could just prove the perfect match for the source material and its actors.

Beyond the reshoots and the change in tone, it's been revealed that Jon Hamm almost played Mister Sinister in The New Mutants as part of a post-credits scene that would have set up the villain for future films. While Fox would no doubt like New Mutants to become a franchise, the first installment's rocky production has put its success into question. Not only that, it's unknown if Marvel Studios will continue the series as-is once they regain the X-Men film rights. If nothing else though, 2019 will at least give fans the first X-Men horror film when The New Mutants arrives.
