A new IDW’s forthcoming Star Trek ongoing. The Defiant’s crew, led by Worf, is one of the most colorful in Star Trek history, consisting of heroes and villains.
Star Trek has experienced a renaissance since returning to television in 2017, and now it is coming over to IDW’s line of comics as well. Later this year, the publisher will launch a new title, simply called Star Trek, that will follow the adventures of Captain Benjamin Sisko, who returns from exile to lead a motley crew against a dark force that is killing god-like beings. The book will be the flagship title of a new line of Star Trek comics, to be complimented by miniseries based on Strange New Worlds and the Star Trek: Resurgence video game. Sisko’s mission is truly cosmic in nature, but what about those on the ground? Now, IDW is bringing in Marvel's recent Iron Man team to answer the question.
Comments from the creators shared by Data’s evil brother, to bring down a false messiah leading a deadly cult. Cantwell states that while the new Star Trek ongoing will be a part of “the grand tradition of Starfleet’s saga of discovery and exploration,” Defiant will be down and dirty, featuring “Trek’s best iconoclastic heroes and ne’er-do-wells." The writer assures fans this is still Star Trek, but that "Defiant immediately sets out to break the rules of the Federation and go on a fugitive run from Starfleet."
Worf Is Saying Goodbye to Starfleet
Indeed, the crew of Defiant is one of the most volatile in Starfleet history, and will certainly live up to the name. Mixing together heroic Starfleet officers, such as B’Elanna Torres and Spock with outright villains such as Lore shows that Defiant will be a Star Trek series unlike any other - one not afraid to take risks and break cherished rules. The inclusion of Lore, a ruthless villain, on the crew raises serious questions on its own. However, his presence is a good indication of the threat Starfleet is up against, one that will make loyal officers break their own rules by allying with cold-blooded murderers.
No doubt part of Defiant’s appeal will be watching the crew’s personalities clash: how will Worf and Spock, two Starfleet officers driven by duty, interact with Lore? B’Elanna Torres is one of the best engineers in Starfleet, but she is also hot-headed and tempestuous - how will she mesh with the logical Spock? The possibilities are endless for the crew of Star Trek: Defiant, which will break franchise rules a plenty when it debuts early next year in March 2023.
