Star Wars is entering its long-heralded post-Return of the Jedi era with a new line of Marvel Comics, and like many fans, I am thrilled that the franchise is entering what the writer of the relaunched Star Wars ongoing series calls "uncharted" territory in a portion of the timeline rife with conflict and potential for drama.

Star Wars (2025) #1 – written by Alex Segura, with art by Phil Noto, who hasn't done the interior art for a Star Wars comic since 2016's Poe Dameron series – will follow Marvel's Battle of Jakku series, which chronicles the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Endor, up through the final battle with the Empire at Jakku.

In the new series, as the dust settles after the Battle of Jakku, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo find themselves facing new enemies that fill the power void now that the Empire has been defeated, and I am honestly so excited.

"Star Wars" Is Prepared To Tell The Story Of The Rise Of Luke Skywalker's Jedi Order, But I'm Not Ready For Its Fall

Forecasting The Next Few Years Of Marvel's Star Wars Comics

Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku covered events that have been previously depicted before in places like Chuck Wendig's Aftermath novel series and Star Wars: Battlefront II, but now Star Wars enters a time period that desperately needs original Star Wars stories. Most of the stories after Return of the Jedi take place before the Battle of Jakku, but there have been virtually no stories between the Battle of Jakku and The Mandalorian, so we have absolutely no idea what to expect for the first time in a long time, which makes me super excited.

There is so much Luke could learn about Anakin Skywalker, and I would like to see that in this series.

Each of the Original Trilogy heroes have their own paths they follow after the Battle of Jakku, and Luke Skywalker's is one of the most interesting. The ending point of Star Wars (2025) could be just before the scene where Luke saves Grogu and Din Djarin from Moff Gideon's light cruiser, but I don't see it going much further than that. It'll probably span 2–3 years like the other ongoing Star Wars series, which would take it right up to the time before The Mandalorian, but Luke has a lot to do before then.

During The Book of Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker is building his Jedi temple and starting to put together his new Order. We already know that Luke has been acquainted with Ahsoka Tano, but it would be such a precious moment to see Luke meet Ahsoka, and realize she is his father's apprentice. There is so much Luke could learn about Anakin Skywalker, and I would like to see that in this series. There are many other Jedi running around the galaxy in this time period too, like Cal Kestis and Ezra Bridger, that may help Luke with building his Order.

I'm Excited For Princess Leia's Arc, As She Learns To Balance Leading A Government With Being A Mother

Readers Will Learn More About Ben Solo's Earliest Days

While Luke is busy reviving the Jedi, Leia Organa will face her own trials and tribulations. Leia has already gone through so much leading the Rebellion to victory, and now she has the stress of organizing that Rebellion into a functioning government. Not only that, but Leia is a brand-new mother. Her son, Ben Solo, was born after the Battle of Jakku on the day the Empire was defeated. Balancing those two very important tasks will be a challenge for Leia, and I look forward to finding out how she rises to the challenge.

The New Republic and her new baby are not the only things Princess Leia has in front of her. Leia was also Luke Skywalker's first student, and this series would be a perfect opportunity to expand on that small scene we got to see in the movies. Luke already offered to train her, but she initially turned him down in Battle of Jakku - Insurgency Rising #1, due to her not wanting to bottle up her emotions like Luke, so I'm curious to see what changes her mind, and why she ultimately decides it's not the path for her.

Han Solo Is Back & It's One Of The Greatest Things About Marvel's Relaunched "Star Wars" Title

Out Of Carbonite & Back In Action

The last several years worth of Star Wars comics have covered the time between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi – meaning that they were set during the period of time where Han Solo was frozen in carbonite. As such, I am particularly looking forward to having Han back on the table as a central character, one who will have a strong narrative arc, given his radically new circumstances, as both a father to a newborn, and a General on the victorious side of a war.

There is so much to look forward to before tragedy strikes our heroes, until the arrival of the dark times we all know are coming, but wish weren't.

In many ways, Star Wars is entering the era in which the Original Trilogy characters are finally in their prime; in essence, the Original Trilogy was their rise, and now the next few years of Star Wars stories will chronicle them at their height, before their tragic fall. There is so much to look forward to before tragedy strikes our heroes, until the arrival of the dark times we all know are coming, but wish weren't. For now, we can take solace in knowing some all-time great Star Wars stories will take place in between.

Star Wars #1 will be available May 7, 2025, from Marvel Comics.
