CD Projekt RED's announcement that the studio will continue Witcher website crashed soon after the game announcement due to the sheer amount of people trying to see just what information had been given. Surprisingly, however, it has already been confirmed that this new Witcher game will not be The Witcher 4. With that in mind, it could be set to feature a whole new set of characters and stories unrelated to the original trilogy. Relatively little has been released in the way of information, however, and CD Projekt RED will continue to update the community as the game moves along in its development.
On March 21, 2022, an article titled "A New Saga Begins" was published on The Witcher's website. The article laid out the studio's plan to take a multi-year approach with Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5 and construct a new Witcher saga that isn't Witcher 4. There was no official date given as to when the release date would be, and the post was also vague about specifying what game elements and mechanics were going to be included. As of the current moment, only the title of the article and a few small details included within it allow for further speculation into what might turn out to be a fresh start for the series.
As the "A New Saga Begins" title suggests, it looks like Geralt's days in The Witcher are over, or are at least taking a more backseat role. While that's not totally confirmed, as seen by CD Projekt RED PR director Geralt-focused Witcher game to be titled Witcher 4 and for it to be a direct sequel to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. There's still a chance that Geralt could feature in some capacity, but the wording of a new saga seems to imply that new characters will be the focus on this new series of games.
The New Witcher Saga May Focus On New Characters
Nothing at all is known about the next Witcher game and who may be its protagonist, and it could even be possible that players will create their own character along the lines of what was seen in CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077. This would add more freedom to the RPG elements of The Witcher as opposed to focusing on just one character, although there's still scope for the new game to retain some familiar faces too. There's already been speculation that Ciri, one of the key figures of the previous trilogy, could be the new playable protagonist of this saga, but it remains to be seen what direction CD Projekt has taken until further announcements arrive.
In any case, the next Witcher doesn't need Geralt in order to be a success, and this new saga could provide a great chance to see what else is in store on The Continent. New areas and locations unseen in previous The Witcher games may feature, and exploring these locales with a new figure could even provide a better jumping-on point for newer fans who may not have experienced Geralt's previous adventures. Either way, news of a new installment in the series is exciting, regardless of whether or not Geralt is the central character.
