Developers of Amazon Games' massive multiplayer online game New World's player count dropped by nearly two-thirds. After the game's worldwide release, developers continually struggle with a variety of issues, impacting players and servers for the MMORPG.
MMOs frequently encounter glitches and bugs upon release, and Amazon's New World is no exception. Players regularly discover issues with the game like gold duplication glitches, random character invincibility, and unbalanced enemy encounters - of which are only a few on New World's long list of bugs. New updates have since attempted to fix these problems; however, those changes often caused more glitches.
New World developers wanted the patch to solve an issue pertaining to players' unintended losses in taxes, but the disbursement did not go as planned. The New World team explained in a blog post that players were then mistakenly gifted large amounts of in-game money, "very large sums not reflective of the intended amounts." Players who got their hands on these unintentional gifts quickly spent it on high-end game items from the game's trading post, which further disrupted the mechanics of the game's economy. Developers further explained that the only way they could fix such a problem (without causing additional issues) was to roll back the server to the point before the gold was gifted.
After players reported the issue, the central EU server went offline. Within a few hours, it was eventually restored with trading posts, and player-to-player trading turned off. That said, the rollback also affected players who attempted to transfer during the server's troubled time, which resulted in a "character_restore_failure" state. Amazon Games took a few days to resolve these issues and have since completed maintenance. New World's trading posts - and mountains of accidentally-gifted gold - are now back where they belong.
Amazon Games' first entry into the gaming sphere met its share of challenges in its first few months following release. But Amazon Games appears to be trying to make its players happy with bug fixes and adding new content to New World. Although these attempts seem to cause more messes for the developers, time will tell if the newest MMORPG on the block will maintain its position in the world of modern multiplayer gaming.
New World is available on PC.
