Sometimes rules are made to be broken, as may be the case in including banning “Bezos” and “Amazon,” players are nothing if not resourceful, and will always find a way to achieve their goals.

New World has finally left the beta phase and is available for a full release, and it’s been attracting quite a bit of attention. The MMO, which sees players conquering the mystical land of Aeternum, either alone or together has enjoyed some lengthy beta periods, which boasted fairly large numbers of concurrent players. Amazon Games seems to have found success with this game, at least compared to its past failure with Crucible and its scrapped plans for a Lord of the Rings online game (not to be confused with the existing Lord of the Rings Online). On launch day, New World had over half a million players at once, and with more servers opening as time goes on, that number is likely to grow.

Rock Paper Shotgun reports that one particularly crafty player has figured out how to dodge the game’s name censors, and has named their character “JeffrieBezos.” To accentuate the name, the character is modeled after the Amazon founder, featuring his signature bald look. It was likely not an easy task, as many outlets have reported making their own attempts at the name and finding no success. How exactly this player got away with it is unclear, though it may be due to the lack of a space in the name, a trick that can avoid raising red flags with censors.

This isn’t the first time someone has made jokes in New World poking fun at the game’s publisher. During one of the beta tests, one player roleplayed as Amazon itself on every server, sharing criticisms of the company’s labor practices and of Jeff Bezos himself. It’s hard to imagine that this was allowed to go on for too long, and “JeffrieBezos” is likely to find themselves banned or at least forced to change their name soon enough, given that they are in direct violation of one of the game’s rules. Still, this is an accomplishment of sorts, a victory many were looking to achieve as soon as it became clear that it would be a challenge.

It was inevitable that players would connect New World to its parent company, and, in fact, it was expected given that Amazon launched the closed beta the same day as CEO Jeff Bezos launched himself into space. This won’t be the last attempt made to portray Bezos in the game.
