New World's first weekend topped concurrent players on Steam, the game has since declined in popularity due to a lack of updates.

Before and shortly after launch, New World was lauded as a truly immersive and in-depth online multiplayer experience. While the game's MMORPG mechanics allow a large huge collection of gamers to play together on one sever, unique mechanics like real-time combat and a simulated economy helped the Amazon Games project stand out. Players in New World fight in fast-paced battles, using a variety of different weapons and tactics, and the economy system can create realistic inflation and deflation within each server. Unfortunately, recurring glitches, missing features and the lack of a content roap made New World's playercount drop after launch and it has never fully recovered.

A lengthy developer update from Amazon Games, posted to YouTube, gives players a breakdown of the changes coming to New World in February 2022. Several features that caused friction for players, like fast travel cost, will be adjusted to be more player-friendly. Movement and combat will become smoother, and New World's realistic economy has been boasted through the generation of more coin. The developer also teases the next arc of the New World story, which will see new villains rise while old friends and foes make a return. While the February 2022 update seems to address many of New World's most prominent issues, difficulty also played a large role in pushing away the fantasy epic's playerbase. A petition for a New World dev stream cropped up in December 2021, with players wanting to see developers tackle their own game's brutal endgame content. While endgame content is meant to challenge high-level players, many gamers felt that New World became unreasonably challenging for those who had reached the end of the MMORPG's base experience. With player friction soon being reduced in various ways, endgame difficulty should now be much more manageable.

New World was extremely successful at launch, but various issues led to a rapid decline in the online fantasy adventure's popularity. updates from Amazon Games promise to fix many of the title's issues, however, which should result in a much more enjoyable MMORPG experience. The February 2022 update is promised to be substantial, but only time will tell whether New World can rebuild its original playerbase.
