Amazon Games' MMORPG New World's Public Test Realm, or PTR, is the first port of call for game updates, and is a limited-availability server created in order to allow players to experience prospective features. The PTR allows for these features to be tested in an effort to repair any bugs or issues a player might encounter ahead of an update's wider launch.
Amazon Games first announced New World in 2016, and players flooded New World servers upon its release in 2021. At this time, Steam recorded a staggering 707,000 concurrent players at peak, seemingly showing New World was a hit with fans. While its early success was impressive, the game's player count quickly dropped, with s citing a lack of meaningful game updates, alongside general gameplay issues and frustrations with combat, as problems. While Amazon Games has taken steps to ensure the standard of New World with the implementation of the PTR, fans have been awaiting new New World.
Unveiling the new update on the official New World website, later shared by New World on Twitter, Amazon Games has outlined what players can expect when the Heart of Madness update launches later this March. The content will introduce a plethora of new additions, including the Blunderbuss, a ranged weapon that offers "high-mobility coupled with potent close-to-mid range damage." Two weapon mastery trees offering new playstyles will also be included with the update, as well as a new Legendary Weapon Quest series. The update serves as the finale to Isabella’s story, and will add The Tempest’s Heart as an endgame expedition. This mission is not for the weak of heart, as it is recommended for five Level 60 players. Along with this mission, players can also see new encounters in the wild, numerous bug fixes, and intuitive balance changes with weapons.
Reception to the update has been met with praise from players who've been unhappy with New World content. From the website's exploration of the Heart of Madness update, fans can expect a substantial amount of new content, which should tide over those displeased with the current state of the game. Perhaps the most anticipated addition with the Heart of Madness update is the introduction of the Blunderbuss, though the promise of new playstyles through the Containment and Chaos weapon mastery trees should also appeal to players.
The March New World Public Test Realm will be opening on March 3, 2022, at 10 am PST and will only be offering one world. In order to access the PTR players would have to set their region to US East. The Heart of Madness update and all-new ranged weapon for New World are exciting for not only current players but also new ones, and the inclusion of the PTR shows Amazon Games' dedication to hearing the players and making impactful changes. The Heart of Madness update is promising for the future of New World.
