The surprise return of Marsha Warfield as Roz Russell in the season finale of the Night Court reboot means big things to come in season 2. Introduced in the original Night Court season 4, Roz Russell was a tough-as-nails bailiff who did not suffer fools gladly but hid a heart of gold under her harsh exterior. Her relationships with her coworkers were one of mutual respect, despite their continual snarky interplay.
The two-part finale of the Night Court reboot teased big changes for Judge Abby Stone's courtroom, with Dan Fielding reg to take a job as a judge in Louisiana. His first case involved a bride-to-be getting in a fight during her bachelorette party, who coincidentally turned out to be his former coworker, Roz. The return of Roz in the Night Court reboot was a closely guarded secret, with Marsha Warfield only teasing the possibility of her return. However, now that Roz is confirmed as returning for Night Court season 2, the big question is what will come of her cameo.
Roz Can Get Dan Back To New York
The big takeaway from Roz's appearance in the Night Court reboot finale is that she had some kind of falling out with Dan Fielding in the past, as her reaction to seeing him as the judge overseeing her case is to demand to be taken back to jail. More information should be forthcoming in Night Court season 2, as the relationship between Roz and Dan did not figure into the original Night Court series finale. Indeed, while the show ended with Dan quitting his job to chase after Christine Sullivan, Roz's final fate was entirely anticlimactic, being the only person besides Judge Harry Stone not to leave the night court.
Whatever happened between Roz and Dan in the past, it seems likely that Roz will give Dan the kick in the butt he needs to return to Manhattan and Abby Stone's courtroom. While the younger Dan Fielding would have given anything to be a judge, the Night Court reboot finale suggested that Dan had found his happiness again as a public defender and would have stayed had anyone asked him to do so. Seeing Roz and being reminded of how much he has changed could spur Dan to return to his old job. Roz also had a history of getting Dan back on track.
Will Roz Become A Series Regular?
Marsha Warfield's return in the Night Court reboot raises the other big question: whether she might re the cast as a series regular in season 2. Warfield has said that she is only coming back for one episode but is open to coming back for more. That may depend upon the series' writers, the viewer response to Roz Russell's return, and the reveal of just what she's been up to for the past three decades since the original Night Court came to a close.
