Nightwing stands as one of DC’s most beloved and popular heroes, a status that comes with its own unique challenges. His widespread appeal means that every new story carries the weight of fan expectations, not just in his character portrayal but in the way he’s visually represented. And when it comes to Dick Grayson, there’s one detail that fans refuse to overlook: his undeniably iconic butt.
Dan Watters and Dexter Soy’s Nightwing #127 won’t hit shelves until June 18, 2025, but DC has already released solicitations showcasing some stunning cover art. While every piece is impressive, one variant cover by Serg Acuña quite literally stands out from the rest. The perspective is angled from below, looking up at Nightwing with his back turned to the viewer.
However, despite this rear-facing pose, Nightwing's lower back is completely obscured thanks to Dick’s bubble butt dominating the shot. To say his backside is "popping" in this cover would be an understatement.
Nightwing’s Butt Is Getting Absolutely Absurd (But That’s Not Necessarily a Bad Thing)
Cover E Nicola Scott Artist Spotlight Variant for Nightwing #118 (2024)
The fact that Nightwing’s butt isn’t even fully visible, yet still manages to be the most eye-catching element of the cover, speaks volumes about its prominence. If fans were shown the image for just a few seconds and then asked to recall the background details, many would likely struggle, too distracted by Dick’s impossibly sculpted backside. Acuña truly went all out in his depiction, and while it’s undeniably over-the-top, it’s equally fantastic. The cover is pure fun, sparking laughter and joy among fans; a testament to Acuña’s talent in knowing exactly what will get them excited.
While Dick’s butt is exaggerated to almost ridiculous proportions here, fans understand that the greatest artistic offense would be not giving Nightwing a properly voluminous backside. In that sense, Acuña’s work pays perfect homage to the long-standing tradition of Dick Grayson being "DC’s Best Butt." Some might argue this takes the commitment a bit too far, but ultimately, as a variant cover, it allows for greater creative freedom than in-narrative art. So, has DC gone too far? Absolutely not. And hopefully, Acuña has more Nightwing covers in store for us.

Superman Is Officially Challenging Nightwing’s Reign as DC’s 'Best Butt'
Nightwing has long held the title of DC’s greatest butt, but thanks to a recent cover release, it seems Superman is coming for the crown.
DC’s Unwavering Dedication to Giving Nightwing’s Butt the Respect It Deserves
Main Cover by Moy R. Marco for Nothing Butt Nightwing #1 (2024)
Beyond just Acuña’s cover, there’s no denying that DC remains committed to ensuring Nightwing is always drawn with an impressive rear. Covers like Nicola Scott’s Artist Spotlight variant for Nightwing #118 stand as prime examples of this dedication. More importantly, artists like Bruno Redondo (who worked on Tom Taylor’s run) and Dexter Soy, the current artist on Dan Watters’ ongoing Nightwing series, have continued to depict Dick with his signature physique. Even web series like Nothing Butt Nightwing reinforce the elevation of his backside as a defining trait. In short, Nightwing’s butt is legendary, and Acuña’s cover is just one of many works that continue to solidify its iconic status.
