Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Nightwing #120As much as I loved Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo's run on DC's Nightwing, I'm definitely sold on the new era that's come for Dick Grayson and his city. In the aftermath of Heartless' attack on Nightwing and those he protects, Dick Grayson received a triumphant conclusion for everything he'd been working and fighting for, both with and without his mask. However, Nightwing is now facing a brutal war that's coming from Blüdhaven (and I'm very excited about what's to come).
Coming from Dan Watters and Dexter Soy, the new era of Nightwing is here with only two issues having been published thus far (Nightwing #119 and #120). To that end, both issues have successfully kicked off a dynamic new arc for Dick Grayson who's now found himself caught in a battle that threatens the entire city. Likewise, it certainly looks like this new era of Nightwing will threaten to take Blüdhaven's new protector to both a very exciting (and possibly dark) place.
Nightwing Is Still The Hero We Know And Love
(Haley's Still Around Too!)
Right off the bat, I was very glad to see that Nightwing still has plenty of what made his prior run so successful. He's still got his charming, positive personality, and he continues to work with Barbara Gordon's Batgirl (his current girlfriend). Likewise, Nightwing #120 sees Grayson saving a rabbit that the corrupt company Spheric Solutions had put inside one of their security mechs as a living brain, tapping into its organically instinctive fight-or-flight responses. After all, taking in strays is absolutely something Nightwing would do.

Nightwing Upgrades His Signature Weapon, Officially Turning It Lethal
Although Taylor and Redondo’s Nightwing run has ended, the new creative team is continuing the epic legacy of upgrading Dick’s iconic Escrima sticks.
That said, taking the rabbit home and completely forgetting about his dog at home is also something Nightwing would do as well. While it's certainly a very funny scenario, I also love that it's the perfect way to show readers that Nightwing's beloved dog Haley is still in the series, having debuted in the previous run from Tom Taylor and Redondo's run. After all, the series is simply continuing with the same numbering and continuity, rather than being a full new start. That said, I'm glad certain elements from the old arc are being maintained and incorporated to the degree that they are.
Nightwing's Newest Foes Are Manufacturing A City-Wide Gang War
Gangs vs Blüdhaven's "Finest"
It's also very exciting to see the new threats that are now facing Nightwing. The tech corporation Spheric Solutions has moved to Blüdhaven, and it's become very evident that their intentions for the city are less than altruistic. Firstly, they've intentionally been pitting the city's various gangs against one another by secretly killing all the bosses, motivating Nightwing to offer his protection to the various gangs by negotiating a truce until he can figure out who's responsible. At the same time, Spheric has now armed Blüdhaven's largely corrupt police force with jetpacks and all kinds of advanced weaponry to wipe the gangs out.
Nightwing is now very much caught in the middle of a major gang war, one that threatens to have major casualties, and is seemingly being manipulated by a new clown-like marionette villain as the mastermind behind Spheric. Keeping that in mind, it's a very dynamic new arc with stakes that certainly feel just as big and exciting as the previous award-winning run. However, I'm also confident that it could also become just as personal for Grayson, especially considering Nightwing #120's brutal ending.
I'm In, This New Nightwing Era Isn't Messing Around
I'm Excited To See Where This New DC Run Goes Next
Tragically, Nightwing #120 ends with the newly armed BPD cruelly and needlessly killing a member of the gang known as The Teddies. However, he wasn't a full soldier, instead only being a newly recruited teen under the age of 14. Naturally, Nightwing is justifiably angered following this horrible death, and he's very determined to take down this dark new company that's come to his city.
"While Nightwing has always been lighter and more hopeful than Batman, I'm curious to see if this new arc might push Nightwing closer to that darker and rage-fueled line than he ever has before..."
With that in mind, it's going to be very interesting to see if this new arc might take Dick Grayson down a rare darker path in the issues to come. While Nightwing has always been lighter and more hopeful than Batman, I'm curious to see if this new arc might push Nightwing closer to that darker and rage-fueled line than he ever has before. At any rate, these first two issues of Nightwing's new run definitely have me sold, and I'm eager to see what's coming down the line for Dick Grayson going forward.
Nightwing #120 is on sale now from DC Comics.
