Nintendo has not had a major presentation since its Nintendo Direct showcase at E3 2021, held back in June 2021. The event brought with it several exciting reveals, as well as closer looks into previously revealed projects. A new two-dimensional game in the sci-fi Metroid series, titled Metroid Dread, was revealed to be in development. A new addition to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster, Kazuya Mishima from the Tekken franchise, was also unveiled. More recent news coming from Nintendo involves a leaked Nintendo Switch controller patent, though information about the controller is currently unclear. A confidentiality agreement attached to the patent barred any in-depth information from releasing until March 2022.

Twitter RostiResetEra now points out that the short-term confidentiality of the new Nintendo Switch controller patent is set to end on September 24, 2021, rather than March 2020. This change in time frame may suggest that the controller will be revealed to the public on September 24, presumably during a Nintendo Direct event. While no Nintendo Direct stream has been announced for that day as of writing, the developer only needs to publicly schedule these events a day or so in advance.

While the patent confidentiality change is not concrete confirmation of a September 24th Nintendo Direct, the change does several other rumors about an presentation from the developer. A showcase on that day would also put it in proximity with some important Nintendo releases. The sci-fi side-scroller Metroid Dread is set to release on October 8, 2021, and a final trailer is likely to arrive before the launch of the beloved series' next entry. Recent rumors also suggest that Nintendo Switch, so a Nintendo Direct within the next few weeks could announce that information before the title's October 5th launch on other platforms.
