Nintendo Directs are easily some of the best gaming presentations around and are always worth getting hyped for. Fans frequently guess when the next one will drop, waiting with bated breath for the next first-party release or what miracle port will cram its way onto the Switch's aging hardware. However, with the release of the Switch 2 right around the corner, fans feel as if they may have already seen the last Switch Direct.

Fortunately, there is reason to believe a September Nintendo Direct is very likely and on its way, largely thanks to Nintendo's penchant for dropping Directs this time of year. So, while fans wait for Nintendo to don their red caps and officially announce when the next Direct is, all there is to do is speculate and attempt to guess what will be announced. Fortunately, there's quite a lot of evidence pointing to a few potential announcements and even a date.

The Next Nintendo Direct Will Likely Happen On September 26

There Has Been A Direct Every September For The Last 7 Years

There has been a Nintendo Direct every single September since the Switch was released in 2017. This means, for seven years, without fail, Nintendo has dropped some form of Direct in September, usually around September 13 or 14. So, it stands to reason that there will be another Direct this year, especially as the Switch 2 has yet to be announced, meaning there are still likely a handful of games coming to the original Switch.

There were Nintendo Directs in September prior to the Nintendo Switch's release; one on September 1, 2016, and Directs in September 2012, 2013, and 2014. Of the past twelve years, there has only been one without a Direct in September: 2015.

Currently, these are the dates the September Nintendo Directs have fallen on:

  • Wednesday, September 13, 2017
  • Thursday, September 13, 2018
  • Wednesday, September 4, 2019
  • Thursday, September 3, 2020
  • Thursday, September 23, 2021
  • Tuesday, September 13, 2022
  • Thursday, September 14, 2023

The Latest Nintendo Switch 2 Rumor Is The Most Exciting One Yet

The latest rumor regarding the so-called Nintendo Switch 2 is great news for those who have already built up a massive collection of games.

Crucially, these Directs typically happen on a Thursday, which would indicate that if a September Nintendo Direct were to happen this year, it would fall on Thursday, 26 September 2024. This seems fairly likely, although really any date that week is a possibility, especially between September 24 and 26. This gives players just a couple of days to catch up on the best Nintendo Switch games of the year before a whole load of new reveals are added to their backlog.

The September 2024 Nintendo Direct Could Be Light On Reveals

Developers Are Likely Waiting For Switch 2

Kirby's Dream Buffet is just the latest game that highlights Nintendo's shortcomings when it comes to multiplayer functionality.

The June 2024 Nintendo Direct reveals were truly enormous, with Nintendo pulling some excellent looking first-party titles out of the bag when everyone thought it had slowed down prior to the Switch 2's release. However, it seems like, in the face of that, fans are unlikely to get a similar experience with the September 2024 Direct. Fortunately, there are a few predictions that would likely to appease fans, although for the most part, people should expect updates and new trailers for already announced games.

These are potential games that could be announced or featured during a September 2024 Nintendo Direct:

  • Metroid Prime 2 Remastered
  • A new Kirby game
  • A new Fire Emblem game/remaster
  • A new trailer for Mario Party Jamboree
  • A deep dive into Mario & Luigi: Brothership

PS5 Pro Reveal Is Weirdly Incredible News For Nintendo Switch 2

With the announcement of the PlayStation 5 Pro, the outcry against some of its features may be leading to the future success of the Nintendo Switch 2.

In addition to these, it would likely feature a slew of third-party games and updates for releases on the Nintendo Switch. It's unlikely fans will get any more new mainline Nintendo titles, although there could finally be ports of The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Xenoblade Chronicles X. Ultimately, this one is a little harder to predict, and there haven't been as many rumors floating around about this Direct as there usually are, indicating that there aren't many new first-party games to announce.

There Will Probably Not Be A Nintendo Switch 2 Reveal

The Switch 2 Will Likely Get Its Own Presentation

Unless the September 2024 Nintendo Direct is exclusively focused on the Switch 2, which seems unlikely, then it's almost certainly not going to appear. Nintendo will want to save the reveal of the Switch 2 for its own presentation, much like it did for the Nintendo Museum, and not shove it between announcements of remakes and ports of old games. It'll use a full-blown presentation to showcase all the major problems the Switch 2 will fix, as well as any launch titles that show off the impressive new hardware.

Nintendo has made it clear during the past few Directs that they will not contain information about the Switch 2, and it will likely do so again for a potential September Direct. This reassures fans and sets expectations going into the Direct, ensuring fans don't get angry online once it's over.

Nintendo has fortunately confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be announced during this fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2025. So, fans can expect an announcement within the coming months, potentially even in October. Of course, there's also the distinct possibility that, if there is to be a Nintendo Direct in September, that Nintendo is keeping the real reason behind it a secret.

It Could Even Announce The Launch Titles

It is also possible that the September 2024 Direct will be entirely focused on the Switch 2, as opposed to the typical Nintendo Direct people have come to expect, which would naturally be unbelievably incredible news for Nintendo fans. Fans could even expect to see what gorgeous first-party games could launch with the title, such as new Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, or Mario games. Naturally, this kind of Direct would break down all the new features, games, and peripherals players could expect to get with the Switch 2.

It's unlikely fans will know until the day before the presentation, as Nintendo prefers to tell everyone it isn't announcing the Switch 2 rather than when it will. Of course, if the September Direct is all about the Switch 2, it will likely be the most watched presentation in Nintendo's history. The surrounding hype has only been getting stronger and stronger, largely as so many have been left in the dark about its true capabilities.

It has been a frustrating period for those who are ready to ditch their seven-year-old Switch and pick up Nintendo's shiny new console, especially as the Switch 2 will reportedly have impressive specs. Naturally, many are hoping that there will be a Nintendo Direct this month, if only to have something to look forward to and new games to get excited about, but fans should definitely temper their expectations, not only about whether there will be a Nintendo Direct in the first place, but, if there is, what games will actually be announced during it.
