Nintendo has instigated a lawsuit against a console accessory manufacturer for leaking the Nintendo Switch 2 early via a mock-up. The mock-up was a size-accurate recreation of the Switch 2, new Joy-Cons included, shown in January 2025 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

Nintendo has now filed a lawsuit against Genki, the accessory company responsible for creating the mock-up and showing it to attendees of CES at its booth, according to Bluesky OatmealDome. The court documents themselves can be viewed at CourtListener. IGN reported on the mock-up in January after going hands-on with it at CES. Genki's mock-up effectively leaked the size and shape of the Nintendo Switch 2 roughly a week before the console's official reveal.

Nintendo Sues Genki For Switch 2 Mock-Up Presented At CES 2025

Genki Makes Third-Party Gaming Accessories

Genki's 3D-printed Switch 2 mock-up was clearly based on a unit shown to the company before its official reveal, so that deg and manufacturing accessories could begin in anticipation of the console's release in June, which was not known at the time. A Genki representative even expressed surprise to IGN about all the attention the mock-up was drawing, claiming its exact dimensions had already leaked.

Nintendo clearly thinks differently, and has filed a lawsuit against the accessory manufacturer for unauthorized use of its trademark. IGN's story is directly referenced in the court filings, which also note that CES attendees were allowed to hold the mock-up and take its measurements.

Nintendo also takes specific issue with Genki featuring renders of the mock-up on its website prior to the Switch 2's reveal. Genki produces a wide array of gaming accessories. Its Switch 2 line-up includes a Joy-Con 2 charging station, an ergonomic grip to attach to the console in handheld mode, carrying cases, and more. Switch 2 leaks were common leading up to the console's reveal, and have even continued in some capacity afterward.

Genki Is Just The Latest Target Of Nintendo Litigation

Nintendo Has Also Sued Palworld Developer Pocketpair

Nintendo's lawsuit against Genki s its ongoing civil dispute with Pocketpair, developer of the creature-taming and survival game Palworld. While Palworld has experienced some controversy over its creature designs, with many being compared to Pokémon's, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are actually suing the developer for patent infringement.

Nintendo's habit of filing lawsuits is already touchy among gaming enthusiasts. The company files many patents for game mechanics that are arguably too broad to be classified as proprietary. Its stance against Genki seems far more reasonable than some of its other legal ventures. The Nintendo Switch 2 has been highly anticipated for years, and while plenty of leaks gave consumers an idea of what to expect from the console, the infamous mock-up definitely spoiled some of Nintendo's surprise.
