Expeditions for Next-Generation Update, which developer Hello Games deployed last fall.
Notably, the Next-Gen Update added 4K resolution and 60 FPS capabilities to both the Companions Update, significantly altered how players interact with creatures by debuting breeding, taming, and training mechanics. Interestingly, the latest patch centers on companions of another kind.
In the Expeditions mode that launched today, players take part in events that start at a "fixed point in the universe," one bringing the community together in a shared journey. Patch notes on the Expeditions introduces Target Sweep Mode. This new feature, attached to the Analysis Visor, forces players to emphasize their tracking skills when hunting specific targets.
As with every other major No Man's Sky update, Expeditions appears to significantly alter the experience. It's no wonder, then, that the exploration-based title continues to go from strength to strength, with no sign of slowing down anytime soon.
No Man's Sky struggled early on, though, launching in 2016 to abysmal review scores and poor player reception. The game's success in recent years has become the token example of a redemption arc in gaming. However, the number of titles that have similarly managed to succeed after a rough start are few and far between.
No Man's Sky is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
