The most recent update to No Man's Sky has finally launched, and Frontiers significantly expands upon the game's base features along with adding in a host of brand new mechanics. Like the game's other updates, Frontiers is free and can be ed at no additional cost alongside the base game.

No Man's Sky has gone through a wide assortment of updates - around 15, in fact - since its rocky launch in 2016, upon which it was criticized for failing to live up to its promises and even investigated for false advertising. Within a year after its release, though, the game had added its promised multiplayer feature as well as significant story content, and from there it's only kept building upon that foundation.

The latest update, No Man's Sky version 3.6, was teased during the game's 5th anniversary trailer earlier in August. Little was revealed about it at the time, but now that it's available to play it offers a host of new gameplay features, complete overhauls of existing game mechanics, and visual improvements. Nebulas now randomly generate in space, the number of possible save slots have increased from 5 to 15, visual effects have been enhanced, and a new Cartographers Expedition was launched alongside the Frontiers update.

Settlement Building In No Man's Sky Frontiers Update

Everything No Man’s Sky Frontiers Update Adds Settlements

The biggest change in No Man's Sky's Frontiers update is the addition of settlements similar to those that can be created in Fallout 4. According to the official No Man's Sky's base-building mechanics.

The base building menu has been entirely replaced by a grid that showcases all of the available parts, which can now be more easily edited thanks to the new quick-access placement of scale, color, material, and rotation options. Over 250 new base parts were added with the Frontiers update, and an additional "free placement" mode allows players to disable snapping and manually place parts anywhere they want, including in midair. Frontiers also introduced context-aware construction sets, the pieces of which change their appearance based on where they are in the building, such as the foundation or roof. There are quite a few smaller changes, as well, all of which can be viewed in No Man's Sky's most recent patch notes or just encountered by further exploring the universe.
