Here’s every song that’s featured on the No Strings Attached soundtrack. Originally titled F*** Buddies, Elizabeth Meriwether’s script for No Strings Attached was included on the 2008 Black List – an annual round-up of the best unproduced screenplays – before it was picked up by Paramount Pictures two years later. Directed by Ivan Reitman, it tells the tale of two young singletons named Emma and Adam who live in Los Angeles and attempt to have a “no strings attached” relationship without getting emotionally entangled with each other.
The two leads in No Strings Attached are played by Natalie Portman, whose character Emma is a busy doctor with no time for a real relationship, while Ashton Kutcher plays Adam – a TV show production assistant left reeling when his father Alvin (Kevin Kline) starts a relationship with his ex-girlfriend Vanessa (Ophelia Lovibond). Filling out the No Strings Attached cast are Greta Gerwig and Mindy Kaling as Emma’s fellow doctor friends Patrice and Shira while Jake Johnson and Ludacris play Adam’s friends Eli and Wallace.
As Emma and Adam’s unconventional love story plays out on screen, the plot is accompanied by an eclectic soundtrack that features tracks from the likes of Mark Ronson, Plain White T’s and Elvis Presley. No Strings Attached performed decently at the box office, earning a little over $149 million against its $25 million production budget, but was hardly a romantic comedy mega-hit like romantic comedy genre with movies like Six Days, Seven Nights. Greta Gerwig and Mindy Kaling’s comic performances were praised too, but by and large, No Strings Attached received a pretty lukewarm reception.
Part of the problem was that a movie like No Strings Attached – almost identical in plot, in fact – came out a few months after the movie’s January 2011 release. copycat film fared slightly better with critics and made a little more at the global box office, both No Strings Attached and Friends With Benefits are pretty middling romantic comedy offerings.
