Noah Munck Was Meant To Star In An iCarly Gibby Spinoff That Never Took Off

A Pilot Episode For "Gibby" Was Shot In 2012

Gibby became so popular that Nickelodeon planned a spinoff series focused solely on him. The proposed show, titled Gibby, aimed to capitalize on the beloved and quirky character who had captured the audience's affection with his spontaneous shirt-removal antics and goofy persona. The concept for the spinoff involved Gibby getting a job at a local recreational center, where he would help shy, introverted kids come out of their shells.

A pilot episode for Gibby was even shot in 2012 and is available on YouTube, but Nickelodeon chose to greenlight a different spin-off, Sam & Cat, instead (via MovieWeb).

Although the original iCarly is a funny classic, Paramount+’s reboot of the series has a few funny quotes that give the series a new edge.

Over the years, Munck has expressed a complex relationship with his iconic role. He did not return for the 2021 iCarly revival series, a decision highlighting his desire to distance himself from Gibby. In a revealing podcast interview, Munck shared his mixed feelings (via OnYourComputer):

"I have a weird relationship with it right now, still, I don't know why. I appreciate it, but I also have a hate for it, which, I guess is understandable because I was the beat-up, punching-bag character, the expense of the joke. Maybe one day I'll have a better relationship with it."

These comments reflect a deeper introspection about being typecast and the personal repercussions of playing a character who is consistently the butt of jokes. Munck's reflections also reveal his desire to evolve beyond the typecast role and explore more diverse and serious acting opportunities, highlighting the complex relationship many actors have with their breakout roles, especially those crafted during their formative years.

How The ICarly Reboot Handled Gibby

The Reboot Ignored His Existence, Although His Brother Returned

In the iCarly reboot, his brother, Ethan Munck, who played Guppy in the series, appeared in the show. He was one of two major stars not to return, along with Jeanette McCurdy. While McCurdy mostly avoided the revival because of her treatment when making the original series, Noah Munck stayed away because he didn't enjoy playing that character anymore. While Guppy was back, the series never even mentioned Gibby. Nathan Kress, who played Freddie, feels that is perfect (via Entertainment Weekly):

“I think what’s great is that’s the most Gibby thing right now. Is just that question, ‘What’s Gibby up to?'”

It did seem strange that such an important character in the series, and one who was so beloved, would disappear without anyone mentioning his existence. It almost seems that his refusal to return just meant that iCarly would just erase him from history. However, fans did learn what happened to Cat despite her not returning, so it seems the creative team behind the revival didn't see Gibby as important as the fans who loved him from the original series.
