Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) does settle on Tatooine to watch over Luke, a central narrative arc of the show is the development of his previously unexplored relationship with Leia (Vivien Lyra Blair). What makes their dynamic so different, however, is how Obi-Wan explains the Force to Leia in Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Many of the Force teachings told to the padawans throughout the canon Star Wars movies allude to the Force as pure energy, fueled by life and binding all living things in perfect balance. In Star Wars: A New Hope, Obi-Wan tells Luke that the Force is "what gives a Jedi his power, an energy field" that "binds the galaxy together." Yoda s Obi-Wan's explanation in Back, calling it a "powerful ally" and urging Luke to reach out and feel the Force.

The Force, to Ben at least, makes him feel protected - highlighting a vulnerability in Obi-Wan Kenobi's titular lead that has largely dissipated by the time of A New Hope.

Leia and Obi Wan in Obi Wan Kenobi Episode 3

Another reason Ben could have described the Force to Leia the way he does is because of Leia's sensitivity to people's emotions. In Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 1, Leia onishes her cousin after he says she's not really an Organa, saying he's scared of his father. In episode 2, she suspects Ben is hiding something from her and is obviously distrustful of him. Ben is surprised at her sagacity, despite her age, so it makes sense that he would tell her how the Force felt rather than give her a textbook definition. Leia is much more attuned to both her and others' feelings, especially when she and Ben discuss Leia's mother, Pe.

It's always interesting to hear different Jedi explain the Force to their students – as each one offers a refreshing take on how it functions. Despite the definitional quality in these explanations, what's most important is that the padawans feel the Force to ultimately harness it, which is Luke's initial issue in The Empire Strikes Back. He knows what it is, but he can't tap into it just yet. Obi-Wan Kenobi illustrates that Leia is at an advantage in her knowledge of the Force due to Ben's feelings-based description of it, which also explains why he took a different approach when conveying the Force to begin with.
