Out of the many crafting ingredients you can find in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, Ectoplasm is among the rarest to get. This extract from undead spirits is used in multiple quests, but it is unclear where your character can gather this material around the world. You have to talk to specific vendors or defeat a unique enemy type to gain enough Ectoplasm for quests or any crafting.
When you use Ectoplasm as a crafting ingredient, you are met with four different effects after enough tests: Shock Damage, Dispel, Fighters Guild in Oblivion Remastered, who need it for the "Drunk and Disorderly" quest. You need 5 pieces of Ectoplasm for that quest, making the item something you need to gather en masse.

Which Shops Sell Ectoplasm In Oblivion Remastered
Rely On Chance For The Right Item
Unfortunately, no shops sell Ectoplasm as a part of their main inventory, but this doesn't mean you can't find Ectoplasm in different stores. For example, you can find one pile of Ectoplasm in All Things Alchemical, a shop in Skingrad. This store is located next to the Colovian Traders and Hammer and Tongs stores, but to get the Ectoplasm in it, you have to steal it and risk getting in trouble with the law.

Oblivion Remastered: Complete Guide To All Guilds, The Dark Brotherhood, & The Arena
Oblivion Remastered has several optional factions you can , each complete with a unique quest line, ranks to climb, and unique rewards.
Other alchemical vendors may sell Ectoplasm, but it is up to chance whether they have any of the material in their inventories. Ectoplasm sometimes shows up as an item for sale in alchemy shops, but only randomly as you interact with vendors on different days. Depending on your luck in Oblivion Remastered, you might see Ectoplasm being sold at a low enough price for you to grab some.
Easiest Spots To Find Ghosts & Get Ectoplasm
Defeat The Undead To Acquire The Crafting Ingredient
Due to the lack of Ectoplasm in stores, the easiest way to find the item is to collect Ectoplasm dropped by ghost enemies. Ghosts and undead spirits are found in many different forms, but only a special type of Ethereal Undead will drop Ectoplasm upon their defeat. The following table has quests where you can automatically encounter some Ethereal Undead:
Quest |
Location |
Where To Start |
---|---|---|
"The Ghost Ship Of Anvil" |
Anvil |
Benirus Manor |
"Where Spirits Have Lease" |
Anvil |
Serpent's Wake |
"The Forlorn Watchman" |
Mouth of the Panther |
At the wreck of the Emma May ship |
One big difference in Oblivion Remastered from the original game is that one piece of Ectoplasm, once found near Meridia's Shrine, no longer exists, making the crafting ingredient harder to find in the world.
Ghosts, Wraiths, Spectral Sailors, and Sanctified Dead drop Ectoplasm, with standard undead you encounter having a one in three chance to turn into these enemy types. Many types of Ethereal Undead appear in the undercroft areas of different locations, especially in big cities. When you visit a Great Chapel area, you can go to the undercrofts of these locations to find Ethereal Undead almost every time:
- Anvil
- Bravil
- Bruma
- Leyawiin
- Skingrad
Most undercroft areas are locked, so you may need to pickpocket certain doors or use a key to get into these spaces. Ethereal Undead are immune to normal weapon attacks, as well as silence spells, Frost damage, and Poison damage, making them tricky to take down. Try using some Fire magic to defeat the undead, then start collecting Ectoplasm from the piles of disintegrated flesh they leave behind.
If you don't want to break into the catacombs of Chapels, you can also explore locations like Sancre Tor or Rielle, where Ethereal Undead are guaranteed to spawn. No matter how you encounter Ethereal Undead, doing so will always make sure you get some Ectoplasm in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered for quests or crafting.
