The Wabbajack is Tamriel's most absurd piece of equipment, and it returns to great effect in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered. The Daedric Artifact of Sheogorath, Daedric Prince of Madness, the Wabbajack in Oblivion has a somewhat randomized effect that, while not entirely as chaotic as Skyrim's take on it, can wreak a lot of havoc, and actually has its uses in certain situations. Still, you'll want a fuller understanding of everything it does and doesn't do before you start pointing it at people willy-nilly.

Finding the Wabbajack requires completion of Sheogorath's personal quest, aptly named "Sheogorath." This is entirely separate from Oblivion's Shivering Isles DLC, which heavily features the Daedric Prince of madness - but certain dialogue pertaining to starting and finishing the quest may change based on your progress in the DLC. The actual steps to obtain it, though, are the same either way. Either way, here's everything you need to know to find this rare, strange artifact, and claim the Wabbajack for your own, using it to your heart's delight to cause chaos throughout Cyrodiil.

How To Get The Wabbajack

An Offering For Sheogorath

The location of Sheogorath's Shrine in Oblivion Remastered.

You may take on this quest beginning at level two, but you'll need to find Sheogorath's Shrine entirely on your own. It's located at the marker on the map above, south of Bravil and north of Leyawiin, about halfway down the road between the two cities that follows the western bank of the Lower Niben. Approach the Shrine and look for the NPC named Ferul Ravel. He'll explain that Sheogorath only deals with mortals when they provide him with an offering. He demands the following:

  • A head of lettuce
  • A ball of yarn
  • A Lesser Soul Gem

You'll have to source all of the above yourself; the quest gives you no guidance as to where to get them. The lettuce and yarn should be relatively easy to find, as these are extremely common pieces of clutter that spawn in chests around the world. Try searching homes and inns in any of the cities, or even in the small nearby town of Border Watch, to find them. You're most likely to find Soul Gems at Mages Guild branches, or in magic shops.

If you've already started The Shivering Isles and are willing to travel back and forth, you can usually find similar offerings around Sheogorath's various shrines in New Sheoth.

With the three offerings on your person, interact with the shrine, and you'll be greeted by either Sheogorath or Haskill (depending on your progress through The Shivering Isles). Listen to the monologue, and they'll explain that Sheogorath believes Border Watch is too boring, and wants to spice it up. Therefore, your goal here is to make an obscure prophecy, called the K'sharra, come true. You'll be responsible for the first two steps of the prophecy, but Sheogorath will finish the job.

The K'sharra Prophecy

Ri'Bassa in Oblivion Remastered.

Go (or return) to Border Watch and begin asking around about the K'sharra prophecy. Most NPCs there will point you towards Ri'Bassa, the local shaman. He's usually found wandering around the relatively small town, so he can be a little difficult to find. If you're having trouble, try the Border Watch Inn at 11 AM or 7 PM, or his home between 10 PM and 4 AM.

Find Ri'Bassa wherever you can, and raise his affinity for you as high as possible (at least 60) with a combination of bribery and Oblivion's persuasion mini-game. Ask him about the K'sharra, and he'll tell you that there are three signs that make up the prophecy: first, the plague of vermin; second, the plague of famine; and third, the plague of fear, which he refuses to talk about.

Plague Of Vermin

Head over to the Border Watch Inn, where you'll find a pair of display cases full of rare and aromatic cheeses. The particular one you want is the Olroy Cheese, which sits by itself in the display case on the left. You may either pick the lock on this case (Very Hard level) using the usual Security skills or an Open spell, or steal the key from S'thasa, the innkeep.

Take the Olroy Cheese and place it in the cooking pot just outside and to the left. After a few moments, a swarm of rats will run into the town square and congregate around the pot. Ri'Bassa will come running after them, sprinkling handfuls of rat poison on the ground. Watch this happen and talk to Ri'Bassa to confirm he's witnessed the first part of the prophecy.

Plague Of Famine

Head south down the path from the cooking pot, and you'll find a small animal pen filled with sheep. You'll need to kill the sheep to convince Ri'Bassa that the second plague has taken hold.

There are two ways to do this: either grab the rat poison Ri'Bassa left by the cooking pot and place it in the sheep's feeding trough (the small stone structure in the center of the pen, filled with bales of hay), or simply attack the sheep with weapons and spells as normal. Using the poison is slower, but much sneakier; just wait until all the sheep have eaten their fill, and they'll all drop dead simultaneously.

Plague Of Fear

Once this is done, you'll receive a telepathic message from Sheogorath instructing you to head to the center of town. Do so, standing near the stone stairs, and simply watch as the sky turns red and flaming wolves rain from above.

What The Wabbajack Does

Effects & Tips

Sheogorath in Oblivion Remastered balancing a staff in his hand.

The Wabbajack is a unique staff that activates a magic effect on any creature (except humans): for ten seconds after it's cast, it turns the target into one of the following creatures at random.

  • Daedroth
  • Deer
  • Goblin
  • Ogre
  • Rat
  • Sheep
  • Skeleton
  • Troll

There is absolutely no predicting which creature the Wabbajack will spawn; all of the above are equally likely, and appear in no specific order. You may try transforming a goblin into a sheep, hoping for an easier fight, only to spawn a Daedroth instead. Note also that the spawned creature will have a full HP bar, and, when they transform back, the target will also heal fully.

So the Wabbajack won't exactly turn your enemies into docile sheep, but it does have some highly specific uses. Creatures immune or resistant to normal damage, like ghosts and will-o-the-wisps, can be transformed into flesh-and-blood creatures more vulnerable to physical weapons. Since using the Wabbajack spawns hostile creatures, you can use it cleverly to kill non-hostile NPCs without incurring a bounty or blood price.

While the Wabbajack isn't Cyrodiil's most universally applicable item, it's a fun little distraction, and can be useful in certain scenarios. If only for the fun of it, "Sheogorath" is worth completing as you play through The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.
