A new report reveals why Warner Bros. gave Paul Thomas Anderson and Leonardo DiCaprio $130 million+ for their new movie, One Battle After Another, despite that being double the director's biggest box office ever. Two of the most acclaimed actors and directors working today, Anderson and DiCaprio's team-up was first announced in January 2024, carrying a reported budget of over $100 million. Virtually no other details have been confirmed other than its cast, which also includes Regina Hall, Sean Penn, Alana Haim, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris, and Benicio del Toro.
Now, a new report reveals why the studio is shelling out so much money for Paul Thomas Anderson's new movie. According to a report by Bloomberg, Warner Bros. justified spending at least $130 million on the budget due to Leonardo DiCaprio's involvement. Because of his casting, the studio is projecting the movie could make $180 million in the United States and Canada alone.
One Battle After Another is rumored to be loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon's novel Vineland. Anderson previously adapted Pynchon's Inherent Vice.
What One Battle After Another's Big Budget Means For Leonardo DiCaprio
He Continues To Be A Big Box Office Draw
Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers working today, having been nominated for a whopping 11 Academy Awards for his writing, directing, and Best Picture several times. However, he hasn't been the most commercially successful filmmaker. His highest-grossing film, There Will Be Blood, made only $76 million at the box office on a $25 million budget. In turn, by giving Anderson a reported $130 million budget for his next movie, Warner Bros. is taking a significant risk, especially since it reportedly needs to make $300 million to turn a profit.

Leonardo DiCaprio's 10 Highest-Grossing Movies
From psychological thrillers to blockbuster action films, Leonardo DiCaprio has starred in plenty of box office hits throughout his impressive career.
However, Warner Bros is willing to justify the big budget because of DiCaprio's casting, showing just how big of a box office draw he is. DiCaprio is an equally acclaimed actor, having been nominated for six Academy Awards over his career, though he also has a great track record at the box office. The Revenant, for which he won his first Oscar, made $533 million on a $135 million budget. DiCaprio has also led movies like Inception, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and The Wolf of Wall Street to much box-office success.
Our Take On Warner Bros. Giving One Battle After Another A Big Budget
The Studio Is ing Original Projects
By giving Paul Thomas Anderson's new movie a big budget, Warner Bros. is continuing to acclaimed filmmakers creating original projects, even if their commercial appeal might not be obvious. The studio did the same by giving Ryan Coogler $90 million for his new supernatural horror movie, Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan. Hopefully, the studio's of original projects pays off, but in the case of One Battle After Another, Warner Bros. has good reason to suspect that DiCaprio's consistent track record will justify the investment, in one way or another.
One Battle After Another is scheduled for release on August 8, and will be Anderson's first film released in IMAX.
