One Piece Fans Swear There's A New Movie In The Making

As broadcast on Anime Japan 2025 included a mock television news report segment. This segment was hosted by several key figures: Hiroyuki Nakano, former editor-in-chief of Shōnen Jump and current head of One Piece Media; Ryuta Koike, Toei Animation executive and co-producer of the One Piece anime; and Yuriko Yamaguchi, the legendary voice actress who plays Nico Robin.

One Piece is one of anime's longest running series and now it is getting its own short and vertical spin-off called "One Piece in Love" about fans.

As the news report begins, Yamaguchi's off-screen voice interrupts the broadcast to welcome the hosts and inquire—assuming the report's purpose is to introduce news of the franchise's projects for the year—whether they will address rumors of a possible new One Piece movie. Visibly flustered, the hosts avoid directly answering the question while the broadcast producers display a message across the bottom of the screen reading, "This is not movie information!"

The hosts then move on to announce other updates regarding One Piece projects. Interestingly, while given the chance, the hosts never fully ruled out the possibility of a new One Piece movie. Instead, they emphasize that there are other One Piece news stories they want to highlight, which - they claim - are just as exciting as news about a potential new movie.

The rumors Yamaguchi is referring to stem from fan speculation that arose after One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda's note was read at last year’s Jump Festa 2025. The note, read by Mayumi Tanaka—the voice of Luffy in the anime series—mentioned the word 'films' while discuscoming and ongoing One Piece projects, which at that point only included the anime, the manga, and the live-action series. However, since the last One Piece film to hit the silver screen was the 2022 movie One Piece: Red, fans immediately began speculating whether Oda's mention of the word 'films' indicated that another movie was in the works.

The confusion was only amplified by the One Piece mock news broadcast during last weekend’s Anime Japan 2025.

Since then, One Piece fans have been endlessly speculating about the possibility of a new animated film. Interestingly, despite having plenty of chances over the past few months to quash the film-related rumors, he has kept 'the dream alive' by remaining vague about what he meant when referencing 'films' in his statement. The confusion was amplified by the One Piece mock news broadcast during last weekend’s Anime Japan 2025, where the crew playfully trolled the fanbase in a way that even Luffy, the prank master of Straw Hats, would surely find amusing. Even if there's no new One Piece film in the making - is there any better "pirate-like" way to keep the excitement alive and the fanbase engaged?
