Hulu's Only Murders In The Building is a great new show that has a wild bunch of characters attempting to find a killer within their living residence. The series is a mystery, meaning that a lot of the characters like to keep things to themselves, but audiences are still generally able to get a read on each main character's essence.
So it can be confusing when these characters say things that go completely against the audience's perception of them. Maybe viewers are yet to find out this side of the character, but it's still odd.
Charles-Hayden Savage
"I'm An Actor, I Can Turn On The Charm."
During the show's investigation, Charles claims that he'll be good at questioning people because he can charm them. Charles is a good actor, and his show has many fans, but he absolutely cannot turn on the charm, nor does he generally want to. He's often pretty sullen and likes to keep to himself.
When he has to talk to people, he acts awkwardly, so it's odd that Charles considers himself to be charming. He even its that the people he was dating were often stolen away by his stunt double from his TV show Brazzos. The stunt double was charming, not him.
Oliver Putnam
"Did Someone Order Up A Party?"
In many ways, Oliver Putnam is the funniest and most outgoing member of the main trio, and before they all become friends he is constantly trying to strike up conversations with them. In the first episode, he even makes sure that they all have dinner together. He clearly enjoys other people's company.
So it doesn't match his character when he gets annoyed at Charles for inviting other people to his apartment. He sarcastically states this quote in exasperation, and while it is justified, as the trio is trying to do investigative work, it just seems a little too cold for his character.
Mabel Mora
"Maybe You're Right. Maybe Going At It Alone Is Better."
Mabel seems guarded and independent on the surface, especially early on in the series. Mabel even manages to use her outfits to keep people away. But it becomes clear that this quote is a kind of act for her, and the quote's sentiment doesn't actually match her character.
She is able to make friends wherever she goes, including friends more than twice her age, and more importantly, she wants to have these friends. She feels like her happiest and best self when she is with Oliver, Charles, and Oscar, so going it alone is definitely not better for her.
Oscar
"Damn Bella!"
After getting out of prison, Oscar makes it clear that he wants to stay out of trouble, so it seems out of character when he follows Mabel into an alley while looking very suspicious. Not only that, but he acts shocked when Mabel attacks him in self-defense and cries out this quote.
Oscar seems smarter than this, and he always knew how tough Mabel was, so it's strange that he's surprised by what has just transpired. Plus, he seems very calm for someone who almost got stabbed, which goes against how shocked he is at the other moments of violence in the show.
Jan
"I Really Did Fall In Love With You."
In one of the series' biggest plot twists, Jan tries to murder her boyfriend, Charles. The audience finds out that she also murdered her previous lover, Tim Kono, after he broke up with her. So it seems like Jan is a scorned-woman murderer. But in the case of Charles, he hasn't broken up with her, nor has he accused her of murder before she poisons him.
So since there's no reason for her to try and kill him besides actually wanting him to die, Jan saying that she was in love with him rings pretty false, as ultimately the quote doesn't match the previous actions that she has taken.
Howard Morris
"I Shouldn't Speak Ill Of The Dead."
Howard Morris is a very funny character, and in one of his most humorous scenes, he, Mabel, and Charles are discussing the deaths of his cat and Tim Kono. When Mabel asks how Howard feels about Kim, Howard responds with the aforementioned quote.
But Howard has previously made it clear that he hated Tim Kono, so him trying to take the higher grounder definitely doesn't match his character. It's a very funny moment because immediately after he states the quote, he starts trash talking Tim, and wishes ill on Tim fervently.
Teddy Dimas
"I Like You, You Ask Interesting Questions."
Teddy Dimas, one of the best guest stars on the show, is revealed to be a villain and is only ing the main trio so he can cover things up. This results in him and Theo kidnapping Mabel and Oliver, and when Mabel asks him about the dead bodies in the back of his van, he responds with this quote.
Considering that Teddy has been primarily concerned with preventing too many questions from being asked, Mabel asking some more, and especially questions about corpses should probably make Teddy dislike her. So it doesn't match his character to speak to her kindly.
Tim Kono
"I Don't Know What You're Talking About."
Tim's main character trait is how brutally honest he is. He never lied in his life, except one time. When he sees Theo pushing Zoe off the roof, and is blackmailed by Teddy into keeping quiet, he pretends he never saw anything and lies to Mabel when she challenges him on this. This naturally goes against his main trait.
Obviously, there is a reason why he acts so out of character, and this adds to the whole mystery of the show. It also adds to the tragedy of the character, as his lie ruined his friendship with Oscar and Mabel, and led to him living a very isolated life.
