Summary

  • GOG now offers the original Resident Evil game for $9,99, with plans to release RE 2 and 3 in the future.
  • Fans can play the 1996 PC version with modern improvements like Windows 10 compatibility and updated cutscenes.
  • The original game's campy charm remains intact, providing a nostalgic experience for fans of the classic trilogy.

The Resident Evil franchise has never been more popular but fortunately for those fans who appreciate the historic value of the series, they can finally see where the saga began without needing to purchase a PlayStation One. The original Resident Evil trilogy may largely be seen as synonymous with Sony's first console but the survival horror games were ported to plenty of other devices in the months following the original release. The PC version was famous for including plenty of uncensored content but that version has been lost to time, limited to physical copies that are tough to find.

Fortunately, Good Old Games has come to the rescue as it surprised fans by dropping Resident Evil into its catalog, making this the first time the original version can be purchased through a digital platform. Better yet, GOG also has plans to bring both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 to the store, meaning those looking for nostalgia will soon have access to the entire trilogy without all the glitz and glam of the recent remakes. Resident Evil is already available to purchase for $9,99 while the other two games will likely launch in the near future.

Those who pick up Resident Evil on GOG can expect to play through the iteration of the game that first landed on PC in 1996 albeit with some slight adjustments to make it more palatable for today's standards. It's fully compatible with Windows 10 and 11, boasts new rendering options, improved cutscene timing, updated game video player, and even issue-free exiting and task switching. In of content, nothing's been changed or tweaked; the only improvements focus on making it run efficiently on modern hardware.

While the first Resident Evil game has been available on digital storefronts for quite some time, the version in question is those who enjoy the early trilogy's hammy acting and presentation.

As exciting as it is to have the original Resident Evil officially back on PC, fans are no doubt most looking forward to the release of the second game. GOG has yet to confirm when the sequel will arrive but Capcom's follow-up to its landmark survival horror game is widely regarded as the peak in the series. The 2019 Remake is similarly seen as the best modern take on the genre but it's important to never forget one's roots.
