Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Outlander: Book 9, Written in My Own Heart's Blood!
Summary
- Tobias Menzies will not be returning for Outlander Season 8 as Frank or Black Jack Randall.
- Menzies revealed he had no plans to make any guest appearances in the final episodes.
- This will be a departure from the final book, Written in My Own Heart's Blood, where Jack briefly appears.
Actor Tobias Menzies has revealed if he will be returning for Outlander season 8 as either Frank Randall or Black Jack Randall, despite how long it's been since he was on the show. Frank was Claire's husband in the show's early seasons prior to his death in a car crash during season 3. Menzies also portrayed Jack, an ancestor of Frank who served as a key villain until season 3.
Speaking with Outlander season 8. While the actor teased the possibility for a moment, he later confirmed neither Frank nor Jack would be making any guest appearances in the last episodes. Check out what Menzies had to say below:
What am I allowed to say? [Chuckles] It would be great. [But] no, you will not see me.
Why Menzies Could Still Return In Outlander Season 8
Season 8 has been confirmed as the final batch of episodes for the historical fantasy drama, adapted from the final book in author Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander book series. The last novel, titled Written in My Own Heart's Blood, sees Jack appear briefly due to the time travel used in the story. Menzies not showing up is a slight departure from the books, and a change that will leave the antagonist out of the final season.
However, due to how small the villain's role in the final novel is, it's still possible for Menzies to make a cameo appearance in the last episodes. Outlander season 7 is still ongoing, meaning there's still time for a brief Jack cameo to be filmed for season 8. While the final season is currently in production, its lack of a concrete release date means a scene with him could be still made, right up until the episodes air.
Outlander season 7 part 2 will be airing later in 2024.
Another possibility for either Frank or Jack's return is the Outlander: Blood of My Blood, a prequel series set to feature Claire and Jamie's parents. Given how important both characters were for their respective time frames, it's possible a flash-forward featuring either of them could be part of the new show. Although Menzies isn't expected to appear in the Outlander franchise's future, either series has a reasonable way of bringing him back.
