Team Charlie from Netflix's Outlast season 1 spoke to Screen Rant and shared their take on why they don't like the accusations that the survival competition series is scripted. The premise of Outlast is that 16 players are dropped into the wilderness of Alaska with only a few items to survive. While other similar shows may have a go-to plan, the players on Outlast are left to survive on their own.
Screen Rant had the chance to speak with Team Charlie winners Seth Lueker, Paul Preece and Nick Radner, who all had some pretty strong feelings about how Outlast is "real and raw." Paul lost 42 pounds during his time out in the wilderness. He revealed that most of the cast lost a pound a day, adding that if Outlast was scripted, he would have "demanded a Snickers bar."
Nick Radner its Outlast Is 'Desperate Act Of Survival'
Seth noted that this was a question he had been getting a lot but explained it was "impossible" to change everyone's minds. The former Marine joked that he "ain't no actor" and reestablished that Outlast is not scripted. As for the high school wrestling coach, Nick revealed he lost 48 pounds while out in the wild. He shared that there were over 5,000 hours of footage edited down to seven hours, nothing that he would have liked for Outlast viewers to have seen more of the "survival aspect because every day was a desperate act of survival."
During Outlast season 1, the game master would airdrop packages at pre-fixed times to help each team: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Delta. While there was no set way to win the game, the participants had to follow one rule: no single player could win on their own; everyone had to be a part of a team. While most of the players considered themselves to be solitary survivors, the lure of Outlast's $1 million prize was enough incentive to learn how to work together.
At times, Outlast's production crew could be seen on camera. Some contestants fell ill and had to be carried off. Another incident that raised eyebrows was when Team Delta took over the camera crew's equipment to figure out who had stolen their sleeping bags. While there were time the crew lent a helping hand, most of the time, each team filmed themselves or kept the crew at a distance. Outlast is very much a mix between Alone and The Hunger Games. With only one team being able to prevail, Team Charlie tried their best to play an honorable game in Outlast season 1.
Outlast season 1 is available to stream on Netflix.
