delayed to February just a few months ago, making it the third delay the game has seen since its reveal back during E3 2019.
Outriders is a cooperative third-person shooter developed by People Can Fly, the same studio behind 2011’s next-gen consoles as well as PS4 and Xbox One. The game will feature cross-play across all platforms and those purchasing on PS4 and Xbox One will receive a free next-gen upgrade as well.
The game will now launch on all platforms on April 1, 2021, the official Outriders Twitter page shared. Additionally, a demo will be launching on February 25, 2021 to give players an idea of what to expect from the full game. The free demo will grant access to the first few hours of the game with all four of its classes and will be playable both in co-op and singleplayer. Those that play the demo will also be able to seamlessly migrate their characters and progress to the full game once released.
This is the game’s third delay, following its first delay from summer to holiday 2020 and the second to February 2021. The reasoning behind the delay is to spend “extra time fine tuning the game and focusing on delivering a fantastic play experience at launch.” Outriders was previously scheduled to launch separately on current-gen and next-gen platforms, so it appears that this delay is to ensure a solid launch across all platforms simultaneously, much unlike what we got with Cyberpunk 2077’s disastrous launch last month.
While the delay is disappointing for those looking forward to the game (especially considering it is the third such delay), if developer People Can Fly is able to ensure a smooth launch, then it should be well worth it. Players have already got a taste of what to expect by way of the game’s gorgeous Gamescon 2020 trailer, so a demo on top of that can further help sell the game to those still on the fence. Outriders is shaping up to be a solid entry into the third-person co-op shooter genre and if the studio’s past works are anything to go by, then it cannot come soon enough.
