While a big screen clash between the universes of Godzilla reboot. This Gareth Edwards directed blockbuster re-introduced the King of the Monsters to modern audiences, making him a terrifying force of nature - who’s also kind of a badass.

Warners then moved on to Kong: Skull Island, which rebooted King Kong and gave him one hell of a size boost. The film was well received critically and financially, and both Godzilla and Kong will face off against each other in 2020’s appropriately titled Godzilla Vs Kong. Pacific Rim: Uprising will arrive in 2018, and while on paper a crossover between all three franchises makes sense, it’s not necessarily that straightforward.

Cinema Blend spoke with Cale Boyter from Legendary during a set visit for Pacific Rim: Uprising, where they briefly touched on the notion of all three franchises combining. In short, it’s not in the immediate future, though Boyter did give a cryptic tease about another cool idea he has for the franchise:

“There's no plans to merge. Understandably that might be cool, but I might have something up my sleeve that will surprise you - that I think you guys will love, that I think is better than the obvious approach.

It would certainly be fun to see all three franchises ed up, and Pacific Rim seems like it would fit neatly within the MonsterVerse. That said, the universe of Pacific Rim and the other movies would need some narrative tinkering to link together organically. For instance, if they all existed in the same world, then the existence of giant monsters shouldn’t be so shocking to the characters in Godzilla - since the Kaijus from Pacific Rim had already rampaged through San Francisco the previous year.

For now at least, Warner Bros is focused on Godzilla Vs Kong will come after that, but Legendary will no doubt be thinking of where they can take the franchise from there. If Boyter’s comment is anything to go by, they already have some cool ideas in mind, but some kind of Pacific Rim/MonsterVerse also feels inevitable in some ways.
