The Nintendo has announced that Paper Mario: The Origami King will be released this summer. The Paper Mario series of RPGs has been a mainstay of Nintendo systems since the days of the Nintendo 64, with games starring a 2D version of Mario running around a 3D world made of construction paper.

According to many fans, the Paper Mario series reached its zenith with Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door on the GameCube, to the point where #RemasterThousandYearDoor was trending on Twitter last year. The most recent entry in the Paper Mario series was Paper Mario: Color Splash for the Nintendo Wii U, where it received a positive reception from critics, even though some fans criticized for sticking too closely to the formula established by Paper Mario: Sticker Star.

There have been rumors circulating for months that a Paper Mario game is in development for the Switch and it turns out they were well-founded. The official Nintendo YouTube channel has ed a trailer for Paper Mario: The Origami King, which is set to be released for the Switch on July 17.

Nintendo issued a press release explaining more about the game. Mario is called to meet Princess Peach, but she has been transformed into an origami figure. This was done by King Olly, who rules the Origami Kingdom. King Olly teleports Princess Peach's castle to the distant mountains and transforms Bowser's minions into origami monsters. Mario will have to use a new weapon called the 1000-Fold Arms to interact with the environment and unfold the world around him. Mario will team up with characters like King Olly's sister Olivia and a folded up version of Bowser on his adventures. The battle system uses a new ring mechanic that lets the player line up monsters for Mario to hit, adding a puzzle element to the combat.

2020 marks the 35th-anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. series and the recent Paper Mario rumors were also accompanied by The Switch's 2020 release slate is surprisingly empty, but the addition of Paper Mario: The Origami King is going to be a huge boost for the system's summer schedule.
