Owlcat Games has announced that Nintendo Switch as a cloud streaming game. This is a great fit for a cloud streaming title on Nintendo Switch, considering the issues with the other cloud games released on the system so far.
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is an isometric RPG in the vein of the classic Baldur's Gate games, based on the first edition Pathfinder tabletop rules. The story involves demons flooding into the world of Golarion, with the player forming the Fifth Crusade to stop them. These kinds of games might not seem technically demanding on the surface, but there are limits to what the aging Nintendo Switch hardware can do. This led to situations like the Pillars of Eternity port on Nintendo Switch no longer receiving updates, despite the remaining bugs and technical issues, as the devs had reached the limits of the hardware.
The Nintendo Switch never received a port of Pathfinder: Kingmaker, so fans assumed that Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous would also skip the system. Owlcat Games has announced a Nintendo Switch port of Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, which will launch alongside the other console versions on September 29. The Nintendo Switch version of Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous can only be played via streaming, which means a fast and stable Internet connection is required to play the game. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is a much better choice for a cloud streaming game than most of the other cloud games on the Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo Switch Cloud Games Have Mostly Been Action Titles
The cloud games on Nintendo Switch have mostly been action games, including Control: Ultimate Edition, Hitman 3, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, and A Plague Tale: Innocence. There is also the infamous Kingdom Hearts cloud version on Switch, which is a test case for why these games might not have been the best choice for streaming. The cloud games involve fast-paced action and tight reflexes, which is something that doesn't work well in streaming games, as all it takes is a momentary hiccup for the game to take control away from the player, leaving them vulnerable to enemy attack.
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous has turn-based battles, which means that it's a game that can be played via cloud streaming without an internet issue screwing things up. The player is free to take as much time as they need while picking actions, as the computer will wait for them each time. Cloud streaming is ideal for turn-based titles, yet the Nintendo Switch keeps using the tech to bring fast-paced games to Nintendo's aging hardware.
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is available now for PC and will be released for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on September 29, 2022.
