Update (8/10/2021 2 PM EDT): Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous developer Owlcat Games has officially changed the game's release date for PS4 and Xbox One from Autumn 2021 to March 1, 2022. The announcement was made alongside a new Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous trailer released by Owlcat. The original story continues below.

Owlcat Games has announced that Pathfinder: Kingmaker sequel is set to launch on PC through different platforms on September 2, with the console ports set to arrive later in the year.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous will see players leading a crusade against an army of fiends. When the city of Kenabres falls, a few adventurers gain the power of its fallen wardstone, turning them into Mythic heroes. It's up to the player to use this newfound power to gather their own army and cast the demons back into their hellish realm, but the enemy won't go down without a fight, as they have the might of the Abyss behind them.

One concerning aspect of the console launch happening so close to the PC version is that they will likely share issues. Pathfinder: Kingmaker was a notoriously glitchy game at launch, and even Pathfinder: Kingmaker - Definitive Edition wasn't without flaws. The Pathfinder video games try to emulate massive tabletop RPG campaigns, which include accomodating numerous character creation choices, storyline differences based on player decisions, and content relating to NPCs who have to react to the whole thing. Owlcat Games is taking on a massive endeavor with these Pathfinder adaptations, so it's no surprise that the first game still has lots of issues.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous has a turn-based mode baked into the gameplay at launch, as it was initially a popular mod for Pathfinder: Kingmaker. This will make the game a lot easier to play using a controller. A number of companies have proven that it's possible to get CRPGs working on consoles without issue, with games like Pillars of Eternity titles running fine on PlayStation and Xbox systems. The initial buzz surrounding Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous has been positive so far, so the launch version of the game might be a step up from the previous entry in the series.
