The Book of Boba Fett. Spinning off from the events of 2021's The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker follows the events of Christopher Smith (John Cena) as he is recruited into yet another black ops mission to fight a mysterious alien threat, known as butterflies, while also grappling with his own moral code and his upbringing. The series premiered the first three episodes on HBO Max on January 13, 2022, and is set to run until February 17, 2022.
The series received universal acclaim from the start, with Peacemaker standing as the highest-rated DCEU project on Rotten Tomatoes. The series is the first attempt at bringing the world of the DCEU to television, something Marvel Studios just started in 2021 with the release of five different streaming series. James Gunn has already hinted at working on another DC series, and with the positive word of mouth for Peacemaker, it is possible a second season could be on the horizon.
According to Business Insider, Peacemaker is the biggest streaming series in the world as it is 69.5 times more in demand than the average series. The study was done by Parrot Analytics, which measures audience demand by taking the overall popularity of a TV series into . The series beat out Netflix's The Witcher and Disney+'s The Book of Boba Fett. The study also found an increase for HBO Max programming as demand grew by 39.2%. In of demand share for original TV shows and movies, HBO Max was the fastest-growing major streaming service in 2021, which is impressive, given HBO Max has fewer subscribers than Netflix and Disney+.
While Peacemaker has received praise from its initial episode, the reaction to The Book of Boba Fett has been far more mixed. Despite featuring a fan favorite character who is arguable more well-known than Peacemaker, many have taken issue with Boba Fett's pacing and storytelling choices like keeping the story set primarily on Tatooine. The series has been less popular than The Mandalorian. Both The Book of Boba Fett and Peacemaker seemed to be tied together in of viewership and reviews, as The Book of Boba Fett began airing three weeks before Peacemaker, which meant that both had their first three episodes up at the same time to be judged next to each other. The Book of Boba Fett will wrap up its season on February 9, 2022, a week before Peacemaker does.
The growing interest in Peacemaker and HBO Max is a promising development for both the DCEU and other adaptations of DC properties. Series based on Green Lantern, Constantine, and Madame Xanadu are all in development at HBO Max, as well as two spin-offs of the The Batman and an animated series for the Legion of Superheroes. With how well Peacemaker has done, it is safe to say the character will be sticking around as a major part of DC's film and television slate and could be featured in more DCEU projects.
