James Gunn confirms the release window for the second season of the new DC Universe, which will begin with the animated series Creature Commandos later this year. Work on the season resumed after the conclusion of the writers strike, and filming began in March 2024, with Gunn working simultaneously on that project and the Superman.
In response to a fan's question on Threads, Gunn confirmed that Peacemaker season 2 will be released in 2025, but only after Superman bows in cinemas on July 11. No specific date was revealed. However, this has likely confirmed that the events of Superman will have an impact on the latest season of Peacemaker, which will now fully be integrated into the DCU.
Peacemaker Season 2 Will Be Closely Connected to Gunn's DCU
Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. is Already a Recurring Character
While not much is known about the details of Peacemaker season 2, several elements point to the direction that this season will be much more closely connected to the DC Universe than its previous season. While season 1 ended with cameo appearances from Ezra Miller and Jason Momoa as The Flash and Aquaman, the show was less concerned with the larger events occurring in the DCEU, instead delivering a character-driven spinoff focusing on John Cena's titular character. However, season 2 looks to have more repercussions for the DCU than the first season.
For instance, Frank Grillo is already a recurring actor for the DCU, confirmed to appear as Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker season 2. Of course, after the death of Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) in The Suicide Squad, it does make sense that his father would want to avenge his ing. However, the fact that he now has a significant role in three distinct titles makes the DCU's connections far more exciting.
James Gunn will direct three episodes of Peacemaker season 2, while Greg Mottola and Peter Sollett have been confirmed to helm other episodes.
Time will tell how the DCU will shape up, with Superman being the first titles out of the gate. However, Gunn's comments on wanting to connect both film and television should provide hope that each installment in the franchise will have massive repercussions for the larger story it wants to tell. With Peacemaker season 2 playing a major role in rebooting the DC Universe, the possibilities for its impact within the new franchise are endless.
