Warning: Contains spoilers for Peacemaker season 1.

In the Justice League, and it has been hard to know what part of the continuity is still considered canon. Peacemaker has raised some eyebrows with apparent departures from continuity, and the Justice League cameo might make for one more confusing element.

Throughout Peacemaker season 1, the show makes multiple references to different heroes, strange sidekicks, and villains, in some cases confirming their existence in the DCEU for the very first time. While these characters are teased and discussed at various points, none of these characters appeared. However, in the Peacemaker season 1 finale, the Justice League appear for a short cameo. While Superman and Wonder Woman are hidden in shadow, Aquaman and the Flash are both represented by their long-standing DCEU actors, Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller respectively.

The presence of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Ezra Miller’s Flash poses a problem for the DCEU timelines. The early episodes of Peacemaker heavily imply that the series takes place in a different timeline in the DCEU multiverse to the preceding movies. In Peacemaker episode 4, Peacemaker talks with his father’s neighbor (Mel Tuck) about Batman. In this conversation, the two reference Batman’s famous no-kill rule, which rules out the possibility of a shared continuity with Ben Affleck’s Batman as, in the Zack Snyder movies, the no-kill rule was done away with and Bruce Wayne kills multiple people. If there is a different Batman in the Peacemaker timeline of the DCEU, then there should also be different iterations of both Aquaman and the Flash present as well. All of this suggests that as James Gunn laid the groundwork for the removal of the main timeline from the DCEU, he was already either established in a new timeline, or didn’t care too much about the smaller details from that original timeline.

The Justice League arrives in Peacemaker finale.

This doubles down on a DCEU issue that was created by the soft reboot/sequel of Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne threatens Amanda Waller, saying that he’ll be keeping an eye on her and Task Force X. However, this is never mentioned or referenced in any way during The Suicide Squad, implying that the James Gunn movie might take place in a different timeline in the DCEU multiverse. However, introducing the same Justice League that worked with Ben Affleck’s Batman in Peacemaker, a direct continuation of The Suicide Squad, confuses the timeline even more.

One possible explanation for this choice is that it is setting up the idea that the same actor can play different versions of the same character from different timelines. This muddies situations a little bit as the film The Flash is set to introduce the DCEU multiverse fully and will have previous actors Michael Keaton and JK Simmons coming in to play Batman and Commissioner Gordon respectively. Ultimately, the DCEU cameos in Peacemaker might be setting up DC having it both ways in the future, as they appear to have Ezra Miller playing more than one version of The Flash in The Flash alongside Keaton’s return to his old role.
