Steven Knight, creator of the hit period crime series, Cillian Murphy’s formidable Thomas Shelby.
Originally filmed for the BBC, Netflix swooped in to acquire the rights for international distribution making the series a worldwide sensation. Previously describing the series as “a story of a family between two wars,” Knight’s series focuses on the actions of the Shelby crime family as they seek to make a name for themselves in the aftermath of World War I. With an all-star cast, Murphy’s Thomas Shelby is ed by the late Helen McCrory as his Aunt Polly and Paul Anderson as his older brother Arthur. The series has also featured the likes of Sam Neill, Tom Hardy, Adrien Brody, and Anya Taylor-Joy.
Most recently, Variety is reporting that Knight spoke at the BFI London Film Festival about the highly anticipated 6th and final season and the previously announced plans for a feature film. According to Knight, season 6 has already finished filming and is almost finished being edited in preparation for its 2022 release. In an extra bit of good news for fans, however, it seems that season 6 will not be the last they see of Thomas Shelby and his nefarious exploits. Instead, the Peaky Blinders story will come to an official end in a final feature film which is now planned to start filming in 2023. Check out his comments made at the festival’s on writing across genres below:
And then I am going to write the feature which will be set in and shot in Birmingham. And that will probably be the sort of the end of the road for ‘Peaky Blinders’ as we know it.
With season 5 airing in 2019, production on the sixth and final season of the show was originally slated to begin filming in March of last year but was delayed due to the COVD-19 pandemic. Instead, filming officially got underway in January of this year, and fans are keener than ever to see how the story of the Shelby family continues to unfold. It is also currently unknown whether or not McCrory, who sadly ed away in April, had filmed any scenes for the final season or not. With McCrory’s Polly serving as a strong and central matriarchal figure in the Peaky Blinders world, it will certainly be sad to see this additional feature film without her. Of course, while Knight suggests his film will be “the end of the road for ‘Peaky Blinders’ as we know it,” he also took the opportunity to suggest that there could be other future “shows related” to the Peaky Blinders universe.
Should these spinoffs eventuate, however, Knight has revealed he would choose not to become personally involved, and would instead “ on the baton.” It will be interesting to see what unfolds in the future for Peaky Blinders. In the meantime, fans can rewatch the first five seasons on Netflix in anticipation of the show’s final entries.
