how unfortunate Charlie Brown’s life is. He gets rocks instead of candy during trick ‘r treating, he gets hoodwinked into hosting an unwanted ‘friendsgiving’, and his Christmas tree falls over from a single ornament.
The point is that Charlie Brown can never win, not during the holidays and certainly not in Peanuts comics that have just turned 70 years old, fans will clearly see just that - and every single instance is funnier than the last. Here are 10 of the best early Peanuts comics that prove Charlie Brown can never win!
10 Lucy Asks an Absurd Question, & Charlie Brown is Still Somehow Wrong
Peanuts - November 3, 1954
Lucy and Charlie Brown are standing together under the night sky, looking up at the stars above. Without taking her eyes off the sky, Lucy asks Charlie Brown what he would do if the moon fell right on his head. Charlie Brown then asked Lucy a question of his own, "What do you mean what would I do?", as Chuck seemed perplexed by the absurdity of Lucy's question. Charlie Brown then its that he has no idea what he'd do, since it's obvious that there would be nothing he could do (except simply die, of course).
But, that's not good enough for Lucy, who gets mad at Charlie Brown for his lack of imaginative thinking. Even when Charlie Brown is asked a ridiculous question, and answers it as honestly (albeit also sarcastically) as possible, he's still somehow wrong.
9 Charlie Brown Offends Snoopy While Telling Off Pig-Pen
Peanuts - November 4, 1954
One day, Charlie Brown decides that he's going to give Pig-Pen a piece of his mind. Charlie Brown is sick of how disgusting Pig-Pen constantly is, and he tells him that to his face. Charlie Brown calls Pig-Pen a disgrace to the entire neighborhood, saying that he's no better than an animal. Unfortunately, Snoopy is standing right next to Charlie Brown and hears the whole thing, including and especially the insult about comparing Pig-Pen to an animal.
Snoopy gets offended by Charlie Brown's comments, and storms away in a huff while Chuck follows, apologizing profusely for his thoughtless words. Only Charlie Brown could offend his best friend while insulting someone else, which not only proves that Charlie Brown can never win, but also that instant karma exists in the Peanuts universe.
8 Charlie Brown Can Never Win an Argument with Lucy
Peanuts - November 9, 1954
Charlie Brown walks over to Lucy as she's standing in the sun with a pencil and a pad of paper in her hand. Before Charlie Brown even has the chance to ask, Lucy explains that she's "counting the suns" and that every day she counts a new one. Charlie Brown quickly tells her that there's only one sun, not a new one that pops up every day. But, Lucy won't hear it, calling Charlie Brown crazy while she goes back to staring at the 'new sun' of the day, wondering what the new sun will look like tomorrow.
At this point, Charlie Brown should either stop disagreeing with Lucy or just stop talking to her to begin with. Every conversation seems to lead to an absurd argument, and every single time, without fail, Charlie Brown loses.
7 Charlie Brown Can’t Even Be a Gentleman Correctly
Peanuts - November 21, 1954
Charlie Brown offers his hand to Lucy, so they can cross together at the same time and make it safely to the other side. However, Lucy doesn't see this as a kind gesture, but merely a poor excuse for Charlie Brown to hold her hand. Charlie Brown absolutely loses it, and says that Lucy can just cross the street by herself then. But then, Lucy comes up with a plan: they'll hold the same piece of string as they cross the street.
Charlie Brown is greatly offended by the implication that he just wanted to hold Lucy's hand, and that he didn't actually care about her getting across the street safely. It seems like he was really just trying to be a gentleman, but in Peanuts, Charlie Brown can't even do that right.
6 Charlie Brown isn’t the Only Person Lucy is Quick to Snap At
Peanuts - November 8, 1954
While Linus (who is just a toddler in these early Peanuts comics) is playing with some toys, Lucy aggressively walks over to him and immediately starts screaming in his face. Apparently, the toys Linus is playing with belong to Lucy, and she does not like that he's playing with them without her permission. Lucy makes it very clear that Linus is never allowed to touch her things, while also saying that everything in the house is actually hers. So, assuming Lucy really meant everything was hers, Linus takes off his shirt and hands it to her.
Linus gives Lucy the shirt off his back to end her scolding, which is absolutely hilarious. But more than that, this comic proves that Charlie Brown isn't the only person Lucy is quick to snap at, as Linus feels Lucy's wrath just as much.
5 Snoopy Seems to Have Caught Charlie Brown’s Misfortune
Peanuts - November 2, 1954
Snoopy is sitting outside on one windy fall day when he sees a single leaf blow by. Snoopy decides to chase after the leaf, making a game out of trying to catch it. However, Snoopy is shocked when he notices the wind suddenly shifts, which blows an entire pile's worth of leaves right in Snoopy's direction. Panicked, Snoopy runs away from the leaves, which seem to be chasing Snoopy to pay him back for chasing the single leaf earlier.
The idea that leaves are capable of holding grudges, and have the ability to 'chase' those that chase them, is hilarious - but that's not all this Peanuts comic tells readers. It seems Snoopy has caught a bit of Charlie Brown's misfortune, as his hilariously unfortunate encounter with the leaves is something that fans might expect Charlie Brown to experience.
4 Snoopy Should Know Better than to Mess with Lucy
Peanuts - November 24, 1954
Lucy is watching a bug crawl along the ground, being very careful not to make even the slightest noise to disturb it. So, it's easy to see why Lucy isn't happy about Snoopy's sudden presence. But, Lucy gives Snoopy the benefit of the doubt, and tells him not to make a sound, rather than just shooing him away. But, of course, Snoopy immediately disturbs the bug, and Lucy chases him down the street, yelling at him the whole time.
Snoopy should know better than to mess with Lucy, but apparently, he doesn't, as he 'sniffed the bug away' even after Lucy asked him to be wary of the insect. Lucy will pop-off on someone for no reason, so when someone gives her a reason, they're really in for it - just like Snoopy in this Peanuts comic.
3 Charlie Brown is Immediately Proven Wrong About His Apathetic World View
Peanuts - November 25, 1954
Charlie Brown is walking down the street with Violet when he - totally unprompted - starts going on and on about how one should only take care of themselves in the world. Meanwhile, Violet doesn't comment on it either way. Instead, Violet simply proves Charlie Brown wrong by warning him that - during his tirade - he is about to walk right into a fence.
Charlie Brown's face gets red, as he's overcome by shameful embarrassment. Here he is talking about how no one looks out for anyone else, and Violet showed Charlie Brown that she has his back by not letting him walk into a fence. Charlie Brown was starting to develop a pretty apathetic worldview until Violet showed him the error of his ways, and, in this case, Chuck is better off being wrong.
2 Linus Would Rather Face Asphyxiation than the Wrath of Lucy
Peanuts - November 28, 1954
Linus is crawling around the house and playing with a balloon, having the time of his life. But then, everything changed when he heard the angry voice of his sister, Lucy, scream throughout the house, "Who's got my balloon!?!". Panic overwhelms the young Linus, as he becomes aware of the fact that this balloon wasn't meant for him to play with, as it belonged to Lucy. So, rather than face Lucy's wrath, Linus deflates the balloon and stuffs it in his mouth.
Deflated balloons are some of the most dangerous things a toddler can put in their mouths, but despite that, Linus decided to risk asphyxiation rather than his sister. Lucy had already made it clear that he was not to play with her toys, and Linus wasn't about to break that rule so soon after it was laid down.
1 Charlie Brown Can’t Even Have a Nice Moment with Snoopy Without Losing
Peanuts - November 29, 1954
Charlie Brown is sitting with Snoopy, content to just be hanging out with his dog. Chuck makes a comment to Snoopy that the two of them are best pals before telling Snoopy how much he appreciates his unconditional love. It doesn't matter that Charlie Brown doesn't have any money, or fancy clothes, or candy, or anything else, really. Snoopy loves Charlie Brown just the way he is. Or, maybe not.
After Charlie Brown itted that he didn't have any candy, Snoopy took off, implying that he was only hanging out with Charlie Brown in the hopes that he'd get some food. It seems Charlie Brown can't even have a nice moment with his dog, Snoopy, without losing in some form or fashion, making this one of the 10 funniest early Peanuts comics that prove Charlie Brown can never win.
