The kids from Peanuts always start off winter with a bang, showing readers the great (and even not so great) aspects of the coldest season. As Peanuts shows winter through the eyes of its core cast of characters, many readers will find that they can relate to the Peanuts gang and their activities - as well as their feelings about winter.
For instance, many readers can relate to Snoopy's love of winter at the season's first arrival to then wishing for warmer temperatures when the snow keeps on coming. Likewise, making snowmen and drinking hot chocolate are adored hallmarks of the winter season, and Peanuts readers will be able to pull from their own experiences of winter to find the same enjoyment that the characters do.
10 "It's Snowing!!"
December 21st, 1952
Excited about the first snowfall of winter, Charlie Brown rounds up the gang to see the snow after he sees it starting to fall. Since this is Charlie Brown, things end up backfiring for him, and after he has gathered all the neighborhood kids together and is awaiting the snow to go play in, all they see is one singular, lonely snowflake on the ground.
The kids in the neighborhood tend to get on Charlie Brown's case even when he does not do anything to provoke their rudeness, so imagine how mean they'll be to Charlie Brown after he gets them all excited for snow - only for there to be none, leaving them all disappointed. While Charlie Brown may have jumped the gun on announcing snow for the season, one cannot blame the kid for being so enthusiastic about the changing of the seasons.
9 "If You Were a Golden Retriever"
January 9th, 2000
An underrated Peanuts duo, Rerun and Snoopy have a wholesome and adorable friendship. As Rerun is not allowed to get a dog, he frequently asks Charlie Brown if he can spend time with Snoopy to satisfy his desire for a dog. As a result, they spend a lot of time together, classic winter fun activities included. Rerun asks Charlie Brown to come play in the snow with him, laughing the whole time, with Rerun thinking that nothing could be better than this moment.
Snoopy does, however, think that things could be better - if Rerun were a golden retriever instead. Spending a lot of time with humans, it makes sense that Snoopy wishes he could spend more time with his doggie pals, but he still loves spending time with Rerun, too. If Rerun were a dog, Snoopy would get the best of both worlds.
8 "All the Snow Rushes to His Head!"
January 6th, 1975
Building snowmen is a classic winter activity that those who live in cold climates are fortunate enough to have fun with when the frosty season rolls around. Kids can be traditional in their snowman-building enterprises, completing their work with a top hat and carrot, or as experimental as they want with their snow creations. Linus, being a very creative young, makes a snowman but puts his own unique spin on it, literally, by making it upside down.
This comic strip from 1975 was adapted into the French Peanuts series in an episode called "The Winter Games".
Charlie Brown compliments his buddy on his abilities, but Linus mentions that the snowman cannot stay like that for long because all the snow will rush to its head. Linus likens his snowman creation to a human doing a handstand or hanging upside down, where they will start to feel bad after being upside down for a while when the blood rushes to their head.
7 "I Love Winter!"
December 31st, 1960
Snoopy can be a very enthusiastic dog, especially when it comes to things he is ionate about, like chocolate chip cookies. In this comic strip, he is thrilled about the coming of Winter, shouting it from the rooftops... well, his doghouse rooftop. The snow falling is beautiful to him, with him appreciating the flow of nature. That is, until the snow gets to be a little too much and completely enshrouds him, leading him to it that summer has its good qualities as well, like warmer weather.
Snoopy's stages of emotions about the coming of snow are relatable, with many snow dwellers loving the change in weather and the snowfall at first but then changing their tune when the temperatures drop a little too low. The snow always gets out of hand, even for the biggest fan of snow.
6 "I Never Heard Her!"
December 29th, 1972
Lucy and Linus seem to clash about pretty much anything and everything. From Linus' obsessive attachment to his security blanket to his anger at Lucy g him up to sing for a Christmas program, the sibling pair are often at odds. They end up clashing, in the literal sense, when Linus rolls his gigantic ball of snow at the same time as Lucy, who is rolling hers.
Rather than stop before they hit, Lucy instead opts to completely run over Linus and his snowball, trampling him, without even so much as a honk - at least, no honk that Linus heard. Anyone who knows Lucy knows that she probably did not honk in the first place. Linus is completely oblivious that Lucy is in his way until it is too late and Linus is face down in the snow.
5 "Where's My Big Furry Hat?"
December 22nd, 1993
A running gag in Peanuts' winter comic strips is Charlie Brown's bundled up winter wardrobe that usually involves his big furry coat, big furry hat, and sometimes a wooly scarf. His bulky winter wear hinders him from doing even the most mundane things or keeps him hidden so no one recognizes him. In this comic strip, which continues the running gag, Charlie Brown is missing an important part of his winter ensemble.
Charlie Brown looks for his big furry hat that goes with his big furry coat, but little does he know that Snoopy is using the hat he is looking for. However, Snoopy is using the hat for purposes outside the norm: as a sled or toboggan. Snoopy always tends to be an outside-the-box thinker, so it is totally Snoopy that he has decided to steal Charlie Brown's hat for his own makeshift snow vehicle.
4 "Stop Taking All the Good Ones!"
January 18th, 1991
Catching snowflakes on the tongue can be a fun winter pastime that kids (and adults) enjoy. Lucy attempts to catch some snowflakes on her tongue, but one beagle in particular keeps getting in the way. Snoopy jumps in front of Lucy to lick up the falling snowflakes, leaving her angered that he is "taking all the good ones." What constitutes a good snowflake is something only Lucy knows, but apparently Snoopy knows too.
The comic strip published before this one starring Lucy also featured snowflake tongue catching gone wrong, with Woodstock trying to catch a snowflake on his tongue with Snoopy but getting weighed down by the minuscule piece of ice.
Snoopy is caught doing things to annoy Lucy both in the comic strips and animated specials - sometimes intentionally, other times by him just being himself. As a result, him licking up all the snowflakes Lucy sets her eyes on is just another reason for the pair to argue, something they do all the time as captured by several comic strips where they are either at each other's throats or come to blows.
3 "I'm in Here Someplace..."
January 20th, 1993
Waiting for the school bus to come when it is cold outside happens every school year for kids all over the world. The Peanuts kids are not exempt from the childhood occurrence of standing in the cold for the bus, as seen in this comic strip. When Sally is stuck waiting for the bus in the freezing cold, all bundled up in her heaviest winter attire, her friend asks where Charlie Brown is.
He is so hidden and under wraps from his winter layers and his massive furry coat and hat that the only way anyone can know it is him is for him to announce that he has been here the whole time. The big furry coat offers many obstacles to Charlie Brown in the winter, as this strip can attest, as well as another comic strip that shows Charlie Brown trying to fit an ice cream cone in his mouth in the small opening between his coat and hat.
2 "...Marshmallows in Your Hot Chocolate?"
December 26th, 1989
Drinking hot chocolate on a cold winter day is one of the best winter traditions. Adding marshmallows to the hot chocolate only adds to the pleasurable experience, making it absolutely perfect - something Sally Brown would agree with, maybe a little too much. Charlie Brown, Sally, and Snoopy are leisurely drinking some hot chocolate on the couch, enjoying their relaxing winter day. However, when they see Sally's cup filled to the brim - over the top actually -with marshmallows, they can assume that she likes marshmallows in her hot chocolate, which seems like the understatement of the year.
As much as Snoopy can go overboard with food, especially sweets, even he gives Sally the side-eye for her marshmallow fixation, which should tell anyone that they have a problem. Regardless, who hasn't done the same exact thing as Sally and been happy as a clam doing it?
1 "I Only Broke Four Legs..."
February 19th, 1973
Skiing is a favorite winter sport of many avid snow-lovers. When Charlie Brown asks Snoopy how his skiing went, Snoopy responds that he had a great time, but he broke four legs. Breaking limbs definitely does not seem like a great time, and one notices that Snoopy's legs all look fine. With a twist for the readers, Snoopy quips that the four legs that broke were not his but other people's.
There are bad skiers, and then there is Snoopy, who is an all-out safety hazard on the slopes. Snoopy seems to think that only breaking four legs is an improvement, which says a lot. Likewise, Snoopy does not seem all that bothered by the injuries being other people's, with Snoopy's nonchalance being of epic proportion in this Peanuts strip.
