The new trailer for Epix's and while not a prequel to that seriesPennyworth aims to deliver fans a background story, they couldn't have seen coming.

Season 1 followed Pennyworth (played by Jack Bannon) as he navigated an alternative version of London, where the Victorian elements blended in with the gangster elements of the '50s and '60s. Pennyworth does it all in the ten-episode season: was moving further away from the character they once thought they knew.

Epix has released the new unveiled at last weekend's New York Comic-Con. The short and sweet trailer showcased Bannon's ideal Cockney accent as he continued his fight against the ominous Raven Society, aided with the Waynes' help. Much of the dark and gritty atmosphere remained intact, reminding viewers that the Dark Knight's spirit lingers even if there is no Batman.

Also announced was the casting of two new characters, one of whom is integral to the Batman mythos: Lucius Fox (played by  Gretel's Jessica de Gouw), a military orphan, who's introduced to Pennyworth as a romantic interest.  James Purefoy (Altered Carbon), Edward Hogg (Taboo), and Harriet Slater (Faunutland and the Lost Magic) will also star in season 2 as series regulars.

The release date's announcement comes almost a full year after the alt-prequel series was renewed for a second season; initially set for a summer 2020 premiere date, the series was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Season 2 is highly anticipated, and for a good reason. Created by Gotham's writers, the series offers an inventive origin story to one of the comic book's most beloved side characters, a character who never got a chance to tell his own story.

While Gotham delved into Pennyworth's growing relationship as a father figure to young Bruce, Pennyworth excels at connecting the dots long before Bruce was even a twinkle in Martha's eyes. His history as a soldier and his fight to preserve the British government easily shape the man into the affable, no-nonsense butler fans have come to love. Pennyworth season 2 premiere on Epix on December 13, 2020.
