Summary

  • Annabeth Chase, a strong-willed demigod and daughter of Athena, makes her entrance in the Disney+ show Percy Jackson & the Olympians.
  • The series briefly explains Annabeth's Greek god parentage but doesn't immediately dig into her history with her human father.
  • Annabeth ran away from home at the age of seven and eventually ended up at Camp Half-Blood after traveling with Luke and Thalia.

Rick Riordan's best-selling books, and Annabeth Chase makes her entrance during episode 2 of the Disney+ show. Like much of the series, Annabeth's introduction is fairly faithful to the source material. She first shows up while Percy is unconscious from the Minotaur attack, though Percy re seeing her in the infirmary. He meets her officially later on, and the two develop something between a friendship and rivalry over Camp Half-Blood's game of Capture the Flag.

Played by Leah Jeffries, Annabeth makes an impression almost immediately in Disney's Percy Jackson show. A strong-willed demigod with something to prove, Annabeth is the daughter of Athena, the goddess of Wisdom — and she doesn't take this heritage lightly. She promises to be a powerful ally for Percy, but the series raises some questions about where Annabeth came from and how she ended up at Camp Half-Blood.

Annabeth's Father Was A Harvard College Student Who Fell For Athena (& She Gifted Him A Baby)

While Percy Jackson & the Olympians explains Annabeth's Greek god parentage, it doesn't delve into her human father or life outside of Camp Half-Blood within the first few episodes. Luke briefly explains how he and Annabeth found each other — and the Half-Blood sanctuary — but her life before remains a mystery. Assuming the show follows the Percy Jackson books, Annabeth's father is a Harvard graduate named Frederick Chase, who fell for Athena while he was still in college. The goddess gifted him Annabeth, but the two weren't on the same page when it came to the child.

In fact, Frederick initially wanted Athena to take Annabeth back to Olympus with her. When the goddess refused, he chose to raise their child on his own. Annabeth's household was tumultuous after her father remarried, as the monster attacks and strange occurrences that follow Half-Bloods became a point of contention between Frederick and his new family. Annabeth didn't get along with her step-mother, who never believed Annabeth about the attacks she endured. This eventually led Annabeth to run away from home at age seven.

Annabeth Ran Away From Home When She Was Seven Years Old & Met Luke On The Road

Annabeth's home life pushed her to run away when she was seven, and it's a testament to her strength that she survived being on her own as a young demigod. Luckily, she found other Half-Bloods not long after leaving. As Luke recalls in the Pact of the Big Three — were already traveling together when they found Annabeth in an alley. Once they discovered she was a demigod with fighting skills, they welcomed her with open arms. They became a trio and helped one another survive, fighting monsters while living on the road.

Luke refers to Annabeth as family, and that's partly because they've known each other for so long. Luke, Annabeth, and Thalia vowed they'd replace each other's blood families, which explains Luke and Annabeth's commitment to one another. However, the pair also endured a traumatic loss together. As Luke tells Percy, he and Annabeth made it to Camp Half-Blood — but Thalia didn't reach the sanctuary with them.

How Luke & Annabeth Got To Camp Half-Blood Together (& How Long They've Been There)

The Percy Jackson books reveal that Annabeth, Luke, and Thalia met gods, friends, and foes during their adventures up the East coast, and Grover was among them. When they encountered the satyr, he attempted to bring them to Camp Half-Blood. Unfortunately, Grover made a number of errors on their journey, which got them into some sticky situations. This was made worse by the fact that Hades was hunting Thalia, angered that Zeus had broken his vow. Furies and Hell Hounds were on the group's tail, and they only reached Camp Half-Blood because Thalia opted to stay behind.

This loss has a profound impact on Annabeth and Luke in the Percy Jackson books, painting their time at Camp Half-Blood in a new light. When the Disney+ series opens, the pair have been living at the demigod sanctuary for five years. Annabeth and Luke have both thrived there since their arrival, with the former becoming one of the most impressive demigods at the facility and the latter training to become a skilled swordsman. Percy Jackson & the Olympians will no doubt elaborate on their backstories further as the show continues and Percy gets to know them better.
