During an exclusive press preview, Kinetic Games announced that Phasmophobia is arriving on consoles right in time for Halloween. The indie hit ghost-hunting horror game started as a Covid project and has sold over 20 million copies and won multiple awards since its release in 2020. The game is a solo or cooperative experience, where players are tasked with uncovering the ghosts haunting different locations, through the use of paranormal investigation tools.

Phasmophobia will launch on PS5, PS VR2, and Xbox Series X/S on October 29 at $19.99. (A Switch release is not in the works at this time.) At a press preview event, Kinetic Games spoke about what fans could expect when the game officially arrives on consoles. Besides giving fans a new way to play and reaching the console audience, the console version adds several exciting updates and is working on even more content and features.

Phasmophobia Is Bringing Some New Features To Consoles

New Community Goals And Events

Fans will be happy to know that when Phasmophobia launches on consoles, it will include crossplay across platforms, and multiplayer will be implemented from day one, allowing up to four players to work together to uncover ghosts and hauntings across 13 locations.

To find the ghost's room in Phasmophobia, players will need to select the right starter kit equipment and split up once inside to cover more ground.

The console edition brings a new feature to the game in the form of Community Goals. These goals challenge the whole community to work together to unlock certain features and rewards, similar to the community system in Helldivers 2. The first goal requires the community to take photos of blood moon totems and unlock rewards, including permanently unlocking a "blood moon" that powers up ghosts. Players can check their progress on this and other events on the new event board in their trucks.

Phasmophobia On Consoles Is Still Missing Some Key Features

More Updates Are On The Way

The bad news for fans is that the console launch will not include voice recognition. Ghosts will still be able to hear players when they speak or make noise, but they won't be able to understand what they're saying like on the PC version. Kinetic Games is working on bringing this feature to consoles, but until then, the spirit box is limited to asking ghosts several pre-programmed questions.

Kinetic Games spoke about their plans to bring further updates to the game in the near future, including further development of the Sanity mechanic, although they didn't share any specific details. They were also somewhat cagey about the idea of ghost possessions as a gameplay feature, saying that they can "neither confirm nor deny" that they're experimenting with the idea.

The developers are also planning to tweak the Prestige System to give players more choice. They will also completely overhaul how ghosts look and behave, leading to unique playthroughs every time. One thing updates will not do is add any way to fight back, wanting the game to maintain that feeling of helplessness when facing the various ghouls and ghosts. Fans can expect more Phasmophobia updates as the hit horror game settles into its new home on consoles.
