In Pikmin 4, there are several different types of Pikmin to produce and add to the collection. Specifically there a 9 different Pikmin, each with their own unique abilities and uses. Players will need to unlock all of them in order to progress through the game, however, each different type is acquired through different means in different areas.
One of the 9 types of Pikmin available to unlock are Ice Pikmin, which are actually new in Pikmin 4. These Pikmin are light blue in color and unlike the actual Blue Pikmin, the Ice Pikmin are literally made of small little pieces of ice. They have several uses that will be of value to the player and luckily can be encountered fairly early on in Sun-Speckled Terrace.
How To Unlock Ice Pikmin
Unlike some of the simple variants of Pikmin like Red, Blue, and Yellow, the Ice Pikmin will have to be discovered in the wild to be unlocked. Luckily, as stated, Ice Pikmin are one of the earliest unique Pikmin variants that players will come across in the game as they will be part of the overall story of the game.
From there, they are also going to be the most abundant as well, so finding them in the wild should not be difficult. In order to be able to have Pikmin anytime, players will need to utilize the same method as for all Pikmin, they will need to find the Ice Onion.
The Ice Onion, unfortunately, becomes available much later than when Ice Pikmin are first discovered as the Ice Onion will not be found until players reach Hero's Hideout. Additionally, players will have to complete a specific area to be able to retrieve it. Once in Hero's Hideaway, players will need to reach the kitchen counter and find the cave entrance surrounded by fire.
In order to enter, players will need the Fire-Resitant upgrade for themselves and Oatchi. Once inside, complete the entire area and emerge to find the Ice Onion near the fridge. Note that the Ice Onion won't be retrievable without completing that specific task first.
With the Ice Onion, players will now be able to produce more of their own Ice Pikmin, rather than be forced to repeat an area in order to retrieve more. Ice Pikmin are great for many different uses the player may require, like being able to freeze a body of water, so the player may cross it.
However, the most useful ability of Ice Pikmin is their ability to freeze enemies at which point they become easier to defeat. With Ice Pikmin on hand, players may further explore the world of Pikmin 4, searching for more of the unique variants.
