Oatchi is the lovable companion to players in Pikmin 4, and he's vital to progressing through the game as he helps in areas where the Pikmin may be lacking. While Oatchi is great from the get go, he has plenty of potential in Pikmin 4, but in order to reach that potential, players will need to upgrade him.

In order to upgrade Oatchi, players will have to speak with a specific character, however, the upgrades won't come for free. Players will need to accrue Pup Drive which can then be spent on different Skill Upgrades for Oatchi, but only after the quick little dialogue where they reference that Oatchi has gotten bigger overnight.

How To Upgrade Oatchi

Every Pikmin Type from Pikmin 4 posing together with Oatchi, except for Winged Pikmin off-screen.

After making a point that Oatchi seems to have increased in size through the night, players will now be able to speak with Shepherd at the Rescue Command Post. Shepherd is where Pup Drive will be exchanged for training upgrades for Oatchi.

In order to accrue more Pup Drive, players will want to complete a couple of different tasks such as rescuing some of the castaways, often found in caves where players encounter the various Pikmin types in Pikmin 4. Other options include winning Dandori Battles, completing Challenges, and using Glow Sap.

All Upgrades For Oatchi

Pikmin 4 Red Pikmin and Oatchi

There are several upgrades for Oatchi to receive in the game. While he will learn some skills naturally through exploration and progressing through the game, upgrading with Shepherd is a great way to make Oatchi more useful early on. Most of his skills can help do simple Pikmin tasks, such as carrying items or attacking, but all the Pikmin types will still have skills only they can utilize that Oatchi cannot learn, such as Ice Pikmin in Pikmin 4, which allows players to freeze water.

Most Oatchi skills have three levels to reach, at which point they will be maxed out, but others may only be trainable to slightly increase their stat and few will not be upgradable beyond their initial unlock in Pikmin 4.

Skill

Buff

Level 3 of this skill will give Oatchi the strength of 10 Pikmin.

Command

Higher levels allow Oatchi to be sent anywhere on the map to find stray Pikmin.

Rush

Level 3 will unlock Mega Rush, increasing stun duration and lowering the charge time.

Pluck

Oatchi is able to pluck Pikmin from the ground.

Chomp

Level 3 unlocks Big Chomp which allows Oatchi to perform a jump attack and do more damage.

Heal

Oatchi can ively heal faster, but the Scrummy Bone will still be most effective for healing.

Swallow

Oatchi can swallow huge things to carry them. This is unlocked through the story, but then it must be purchased from Shepherd.

Jump
