News that Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning (Kon-Tiki) with the blessing of longtime series producer Jerry Bruckheimer may have come as a bit of a surprise to many fans of the eponymous Disney franchise. Following the the mixed-to-negative critical reception that the preceding stand-alone entry received in 2011, many viewers who still hold the first film dear may have been a bit disappointed to learn of the studio's plans for yet another sequel - one that is no doubt driven by the hopes for further financial returns, following the $1 billion global box office pull of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
However, some viewers may take solace in the fact that Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will Gods of Egypt), in addition to Geoffrey Rush, who will return as Captain Hector Barbossa - and one more surprise actor who has just ed the film.
According to Deadline, and despite the project having already wrapped principle photography, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No tales has just resumed the filming in order to include new cast member Paul McCartney to be included in an all-new extra big set-piece for the new film. While little is known at the time of this writing in regards to who the former Beatle will be playing in the movie, it is known that the resumed shooting schedule will not entail a reshoot of a pre-existing scene, but an entirely original sequence - added for the inclusion of McCartney's character in the final movie, that is.
Following the cameo appearance of The Rolling Stones' lead guitarist Keith Richards in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End in 2007, McCartney will be the second seminal British musician of the 1960s rock n' roll era to make an appearance in the eponymous genre franchise. Given the fact that Richards formerly played the father of Depp's Sparrow, perhaps McCartney might end up being related as well in some circuitous fashion to everyone's favorite playboy pirate as well.
Whether or not co-directors Sandberg and Rønning wind-up capable of breathing new life into the thirteen year old property remains to be seen, though the cast that Disney and Bruckheimer have managed to drum up for the fifth installment in the series proper is impressive to say the very least. Regardless, here's to hoping that Pirates of the Caribbean 5 manages to impress first-time viewers and series devotees alike when the it sees theatrical next year.
