When an extinction-level event threatens the earth, all of its young adult inhabitants between the ages of 16 and 25 are transported to a new world. Landing on this strange new planet, Sandra Oung and her non-binary sibling Champo learn that they and their peers have been brought there by an organization called BASIL (Board of Adversity Scientists for Intergalactic Leadership). Planet DIVOC-91 will be comprised of 9 issues, with each one featuring a new creative team and cover artist. Charlie Adlard will be tackling the art for the first chapter of the mini-series, which will be written by Surgeon X scribe Sara Kenney. Later chapters will include Alex Paknadel (Friendo), Zara Slattery (Coma Comic), and Karrie Fransman (The House That Groaned). An all-star group of artists will be producing the book’s covers, and will feature work from illustrators like Elsa Charretier (November), Leslie Hung (Snotgirl), and Matt Kindt (BANG!).

According to Kenney, while it will dive into some pretty serious issues, the tone of Planet DIVOC-91 will also feel than, say, ‘Star Trek.’”

On top of the webcomic itself, each issue will also feature multimedia content like tracks from well known DJ’s (some of which will be hidden within the comics as Easter eggs), links to videos, short articles, and artwork by young people that will deal with many of the issues faced by them due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our aim is to empower audiences to make sense of a pandemic situation, to create a forum for their ideas, and to inform science research and influence policy,” says Dr. Bella Starling, Director of Vocal at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and one of the many people helping to produce the project. Others include Sara Kenney’s Wowbanger Productions; the Royal Society of Chemistry; STFC; NIHR; Wellcome Trust; Sarah Iqbal and her team at DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance; Anita Shervington at Blast Fest and Nabeel Petersen from Interfer (South Africa).

Planet DIVOC-91 will be available for FREE, with the first chapter arriving tomorrow (July 15th) on WebToons.
